Thats what I was hoping for when I went back to school...1 year left for my Horticulture BS, specialization in Greenhouse and Nursery management, minor in business management.

The way it looks though is that only people who have been connected before legalization are thriving in state. Start-ups can't get a bank loan, can't deposit with banks. I've considered just staying in my state and waiting. There will be small opportunities for the 100k jobs for a few years but once outdoor production ramps up, especially in the midwest, growing cannabis will be like any other agricultural product. It's easy to grow, legalization will only bring better producing/stronger strains to make up for quality control issues on a mass scale. It will be bushels not pounds.

Don't know if many of you have driven through Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa but there is nothing there. For hundreds of miles there is nothing but open fields. Granted those states will be the last to legalize, but when it happens, its game over for anyone trying to make a living at it. How many of you in Cali/Wa/Co are trying to make a living growing corn or wheat in your backyard? Pots only been valuable because its illegal.

People compare microbrews and what not to higher end strains and how there will always be a value in a higher quality, lower yielding product, produced on a small local scale. How many people microbrewing out of their basements make money at it? Its a scale of economy. Unless you have the resources to compete with the big boys your gonna have to get out, or just provide for yourself/trade with friends. I am even starting to lean towards just getting a straight job and keeping my basement all to myself and friends. Once you have a degree you can get a job anywhere, pot prices don't matter.

That being said, I really hope prices stay inflated like they are. I'll be retiring a little earlier than planned.

You bring up some good points. I think there will always be a market for small scale "micro brew" type buds. I know in the state I'm from there are dozens of succesful micro brew beer companies. I have freinds that won't even touch a budweiser. They only drink the craft beers. I feel like the marijuana market would reflect the same way.

Going to work for the big boys is much easier, if you can't beat em join em. I wouldn't mind 100k salary to do what I love without fear of prosecution.

Denver pulled some horrible shit man.

They convinced people that registration of pit bulls was a good idea. Passed an ordinance to do so then two years later gave owners like 60 days to move or surrender their animals.
These sick fucks used the police to round up dogs from their families and kill them based solely on looks.
So I say again FUCK DENVER!
Oh and the very first "free speech zones" were in Denver.
That is some repugnant shit right there!

You're trying to compare different scales. Specialty or boutique growers don't care about scale, because it's relative. The big boys have to produce on a large scale because of their business plan. Yeah, they may have thousands of acres, however, those thousand of acres have to be tended to, and there is a corresponding cost associated with that, e.g. machinery, employees, insurance, chemicals, transportation, etc. Small scale organic growers with unique genetics don't have the same business model or capital outlay, and their return per unit product/effort is going to be higher.

I'm saying the scale is going to completely change when legalization occurs. Again look to Cali or Co., how ,many of you guys are making a decent living with a couple lights? No matter how good your product is the good ole days of 4500+lbs are over.

If anyone was struggling before your fucked now, simply put. This is the most expensive cut flower in the world, and its a weed. Once people realize that, the price will only fall further. Its agriculture, produce the most at the least and you win. The quality will only improve, even on a commercial scale. Instead of some guy chucking pollen in their basement and getting lucky entire greenhouse ranges ran by geneticists with 10,000's of plants dedicated to improving a single line will be used. I think that's why MNS has always been successful. They treat it like the plant it really is, just a plant.

I currently work at a large scale wholesale Floral greenhouse. I kinda hate it, mainly because my boss is an asshole.

I like my job though.

At this point I'm chooseing between culinary 2 years, or hort 2-4 years. Not sure what to do.

I understand the point you are trying to make, however, people still pay good money for bootleg moonshine whiskey, and you could float the QE2 with bourbon made in KY. I think you'll continue to see that kind of thing with Cannabis, regardless of whether the Great Corn Desert goes all in for production at some point. :2cents:

yeah but are they putting food on the table and supporting ahouse and family just off the moonshine sales.

its gonna be the same as every other business in the capitalist world, they will be able to breed superior genetics by using geneticists and mass breeding projects and then once done willl be able to produce this on a massive scale. yes you will have small growers who still make a profit. but the bigger companies will be taking most of the market.

i mean you brought up moonshine... but how many people buy moonshine compeared to how many buy alchohol from the supermarket?

its very odd i think. for years people have been saying that the government should legalise and tax it!
the truth is, for most growers making a living out of this legalisation is one of the the worst things to happen. jmho!

Yep, in 20 years I'd guess most of the production will be happening in farmers' fields using high yielding autoflowering strains.

As for moonshine, the answer to your question depends on which county you're asking about. Many dry counties exist just to preserve the local moonshine industry. In those counties, 100% of alcohol sales go to bootleggers and moonshiners. I kinda hope this is how it all shakes down after federal legalization and rescheduling. Certain counties where small scale outdoor grows are the norm can keep it "illegal" to preserve their industry, Unfortunately, instead of taxes and licence fees you'll be paying kickbacks to local law enforcement instead. Either way you're going to have to pay the man.

A $100K salary is only going to go to the master grower/facility manager. For that you'll need an advanced degree (Masters or better) plus substantial experience with commercial cannabis production, not just closet grows.

A BS might land you a $40K-$50K job though.

high taxes will keep the little guy not paying taxes alive....weed might start cheap but it will go like tobacco...hell they are raising the taxes 2$ here if passed on ciggies....expect cannabis to become heavily taxed too...I went to school for horticulture and have ran a nursery and greenhouses and 100k wouldn't get me to move to Denver ..fuck that place...yeehaw ..just say no cause Denver does blow....that 100k only goes to the top dog just like most greenhouse business the owner and top man make cash ,,everyone else isn't making squat....
