100° F - Too Hot?

I was considering air cooling my lamp since my closet's at 100F constantly .. is this MUCH too hot, or is it okay?

I think plant growth might be slowing because of the heat, but I'm not too sure - can it?

Yes, chunkny san, that is quite warm, about 10 degrees outside of optimal(on the higher side, as I'm sure you well know).

They will slow down due to the heat, but they will still grow. Just make sure it does not get any warmer, or your plants may fry.

I suggest cooling the lamp with a fan.

Would a 160CFM inline fan be enough to cool a 400W HPS? I was at Home de Pot earlier and they had that for $27 bucks and I'm considering it

Just get one of their small $85.00 ac units....I have one and it only costs about 15.00 a month to run it during the day. You probably wont need to run it at night if your in 12/12, I don't anyway. Very easy way to cool your room about 15 degrees.

It's a small space - an AC won't fit :badday:

Well, chunkny san, it would be better than the inline fan you are running now. :smoke:

If you put that 160CFM inline above your light and exhaust the air out of the closet, it will be much cooler. I wouldn't doubt you be in the optimal range if you could eliminate the warm air from the area.

But remember, the key to good heat removal is to have the fan higher than the light. It will suck the warm air right out and away from your green babies.

Good luck on your growing journey, grasshopper.

howdy chunk.

it's usually 95 or more in my flower room during the summer. i tried a bunch of different things to cool it down. i now just have a fan right at the door and one behind it blowing cool air into the room. i stay around 90 these days.

it will reduce your yeild but i do just fine.

if you are capable of setting up something to cool the light, that or a small a/c unit would be best in the long run. i've burnt out two portable a/c units. i bought the best out there but they both broke down after a year or so.

hi chunk

i grow in my attic and it varies in temp between 80 degrees when its cool outside to 100 degrees when its sunny.

last week When it was sunny and the temp was 100 degrees my plants didnt grow much at all and they are in their 4th week veg, the moment the wether turned and the temp went down to 80 degrees they shot up about 4 inches in two days.

Temp definately has a effect on growth rates

good luch with the grow

That's WAY, WAY too hot, unless you are adding CO2 (then it's just Way too hot.)

Optimal is around 75 - 80 degrees. Even 85-90 will stifle the plants.

If your 400 Watt light has a air-cooled type enclosed hood or tube, a good size fan connected to that and vented outside the grow space will help alot.

chunky that 27 buck fan from home depot (or lowes sells it also) works perfect i have 2 -400 hps units going now both are cooled with "inductors" i have pics of the flower chamber in my gallery i also run 2 fans in the flower chamber for air movement
also if your light has glass or a slot for glass make sure u use it it will alllow u to put the light real close (side note i used the double thick glass on one and the single thick glass on the other the double u can touch the glass without burning your hand or even being considered hot the single u can only get about 2-3" AWAY i will be replacing that piece of glass real soon) the closer to the plant the better especially with 400w lights as they are only effective 21" away from the light
hope this helps
keep it growing green!!!

85 degrees will stifle vegging plants?Yea,I read that to lol.I veg at 85 degrees although I could bring it down, the spidermites would like that.Do yourself a huge favor folks with higher than "optimum" vegging temps, spend 30 bucks on a cool mist humidifier with a visable mist. Its not really necessary with 85 degree canopy temps, but anything higher it surely is.Mites hate em too..You will see a difference in growth rates at higher temps with this one simple thing, trust me.If you can get RH up to 70% which isnt easy you will see some growin. This applies to veg only of course.

Nice. Thanks everyone. I'm going to purchase the proper fan/ducting today.

I have a reflector without any glass - should I hang the fan right next to the lamp, or vertically next to it?

i have 5 ladies and my temps usually stay around 82 and i am 18 days into flower? is this too high? my light is not air cooled but i may be buying a new reflector asap. i have a 170cfm exhaust fan now but i am pulling it throuhg a carbon filter so i dont think its every strong. i f i seal up my grow room and just use my exhaust and my intake my temps reach almost 90, but if i leave a door open and put a fan there i can get my tmps down to about 82 constintly.

Yea,plants stop growing at 77F lol!Why do people repeat bullshit they've heard/read in some book and pass it on as gospel?I wouldnt veg my plants at 75 degrees if you paid me,been there, spidermite heaven.I prefer by FAR 85 degrees and a cool mist humidifier, beats the fuck out of the alternative.75 is too cool for my vegging plants, others may prefer it but dont say they wont grow well at 85 or even 90,thats just bullshit. As for flowering plants at 80-85 degrees?Kick in some co2 enricment then kick it up to 85-90 degrees F at the canopy.

6 1K fixtures and 84 degrees?I'd definately invest in a co2 enrichment source and controller. You plants will finish OK at 85 degrees but you could do a lot better with enrichment
