If you think you can just scratch the ground and plant a seed your crazy. Everyone (that is successful) will dig a hole and amend the soil, unless your in the middle of a cornfield. Even if your soil is fantastic you will need to turn it over and aerate it. This is why farmers plow their fields.
Not trying to rain on your parade. The good folks here at IC have been telling you to dig a hole and ammend the soil for a reason.
When I run into the heavy clay soil, I loosen with rice hulls. They are organic, but dont break down very fast. About 25% of the mix for heavy soil. They drain very well ,and are not easily spotted when mixed in with the soil. They wont compress or absorb water. Cheap too.
