10 gallons of coco. Tree? Unnecessary?

I have a few indicas in three gallon pots. Want to move them up to a larger pot so I can harvest,,,,,,,more pot. (Is that why they call it pot?) Anyway, in soil I used to use 8-10 gallon pots and so I have a ton of ten gallon ones in the backyard, in snow right now. My instincts are to load up a ton of coco and grow everything in 10 gal pots. My other instincts say nothing more than 4-5 gallons. What do you think? Everyone I see here seems to use small pots, lots of plants. I grow with 1 400 HPS, and 1x 1000 w hps.

how much space will ea plant have?

w/ 1k & 4oo, maybe 6-8 plants -max. preferably just 2-4... total.

they will get huge in 5 gal, if vegged in the 5 gal, for 6-8 weeks... or, until plant is 3x3x3'++ in every direction - excluding stem.

5 gal, vegged for 6 wks, under 20/4, w/ all the 14oo w...... then flower!

hope this helps. enjoy your garden!

yeah that would be a tree, 6 weeks veg in a 5gal should be fine, I can't see a need to use a 10 gallon pot unless growing 10 foot trees, I dont think thats what your after is it?

6-8 week veg in 5gal like mistress suggested should net you a 5-6 foot plant depending on strain and other variables. just my .02 good luck!!

mistress, question for you -

i have been trying to grow trees my past few grows. i normally top early to get 2-3 main branches and then i sometimes top again once these main branches are 6-8" long. once everything gets to be around 20-24" tall i try to bend the main branches apart and open up the middle.

how does this process compare to your process used to create 3x3x3 trees? how aggressively do you prune and lst? do you trim the smaller 'sucker' branches or some of the inner nodes that won't receive much light?

thanks for any additional information you can provide!

depends on few factors...

basically, veg until roots come out of 5 gal bucket like they would 4" container, 3 weeks after cloning...

it is the root structure that must be developed... thinning depends on cultivar... but, want imaginary box of plant matter that is cubic yard - before flowering... this excludes stem.

however, it is not the cubic yard foliage alone that is signal... it is root mass... amount of fruit is directly proportional to root mass... & root mass is generally same size as foliage - if healthy.

pruning, training, & thinning depend on specific cut... ea require different tech.
but... whatever ea plant-type needs, staking/tomato caging/yoyo-ing/supporting plants:yes::yes:+...

also, adding some form of silica to diet of plant +.

dont take fan leaves, unless very damaged... but, pinch off growing-tips closest to stem. so, leaves remain. they make food for the plant...

veg fully rooted clone 8 wks... from 4" to 6" to 1 gal to 2 gal to 5 gal... only transplanted to next container when roots come out of all drainage holes...

first few weeks of veg, 'pre-veg'... under 4oo-6oo...
then 1k per 1-4 plants, 2-4 wks... 22/2-20/4...

flower only started when roots come out of 4-5 gal container... that is signal...

they can get huge in little 1-3 gal containers, if veg long enough;):)

hope this helps. enjoy your garden!

thanks for the detailed response mistress. i didn't realize that growing trees required so many transplants. i have been putting fully rooted clones into 2x2" containers, then to 1 gallon pots, then to 5 gallon pots... i suspect that the plants were getting rootbound and unhappy in the 2x2" containers and 1 gallon pots

also like the idea of flipping to flower when roots come out of the drain holes.

thanks!
