That happened to me once. Turned out one was a boy and the other a girl. Wierd, huh? Killed the male and the girl grew up strong and fine.

You've got twins - quite common, even I've had 'em :D

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure it isn't possible for a seed to have both genders in a single seed. It could have 2 sprouts but not 2 genders since they are actually the same plant with dual apical meristems. Sounds like BS to me but I'd love to be shown otherwise. I don't think a seed with 2 sprouts would be very healthy or long lived.

Are you saying that sex is predetermined?

Interesting topic.

I'm not so sure myself, all I know is that some people say sex is predetermined and some say that environmental factors determines sex.

Some common instances:

"More females if you use blue light to veg"
"More females if you use taller pots so tap root isn't obstructed"

I don't know about predetermined but whatever they happen to be they will both be unless the seed shell actually contains 2 sepperate dicots.

There can be two seperate seedlings within the seed shell each with their own root beginnings and bodies, and the picture is below for biological reference. It is unsure of why the twins come, but it would be interesting to see three triplets. Not sure how the sexes are affected, but it happened to me when I planted 2 hashberry seeds and 4 seedlings (2 each) sprouted. Had to cull them all after a while, but they grew independently non-joined, 2 turned out male, 2 died, but 3 could have survived with 1 small runt but culled them all just for good measure. Will see what happens with the rest of the Hashberry and is odd as it never happened before with a few hashberry seedlings planted previously out of the pack. Will see about the rest of them and if anyone has the experience of having twins or better yet, triplets, document it here and share some input regarding this occurence. Ideally not the greatest breeding trait unless trying to create something odd. Twins could happen, just not sure how far the sex is determined by both seedlings independently. In this case, the sex was the same, but that may not automatically be the case 100% of the time. Especially when alot of the "doubles" are smaller and undergo more stress than the more vigorous double which could predominantly be female. It may even be strain related, especially if they are used as offspring and for seeding by the local natives. If bred with, it is not going to render all seedlings doubles, just that one particular recessive trait will remain in the background so the occasional rogue seed will have a double inside and it may not even show up in a generation, and if so, it could still be culled with the strain having a given tendency. Like when you see the sperm with a double head for a twin, this could be a double pollen that hit a pistil making for two seperate seedlings in one single seed womb. Either way you slice it it is the males pollens' fault, just like with twins it is a rare double pollen physically.

Colcichine is not so good to drink in case some don't know better. And twins are a natural phenomenon just like with human twins, nothing else is needed. Any info someone might have to share on the subject would be enlightening to the third level. :abduct:
