The official DIY KIEF Hash Shaker

question: What's absolute necessary tool to have in a stoner tool belt.
answer: A hash shaker!!



Although I love bubble.. my kief shaker has produced more hash w/ better flavor for many years more.. at a laughable price. It will never replace what a 5-20 gal bubble bags do.. but is more for a personal intimate hash experience.. and combines nicely with the Bubble.


I've been lurking on these boards for along time and never saw anyone post this. I'm sure its been done.. but for those that dont use one.. here's a quick rundown on my uses for it.

1. I smoke chronic.. when I smoke I pull the small leaves off the calyxes so that way I'm smoking the most pure product. Usuall this leaves a pile of shake.. after a 1/8 or a z I got a small pile to toss in.

2. If I have some bags of leaf kicking or small buds.. I scoop a handful out when desperate... and shake shake shake.. and booyaas!!












I've been using this same jar for maybe 5 years now.. and have been doing this for maybe 10.. it works amazing everytime.


I'm going to give some of the tips or things i've noticed over the years to get you all started. If anyone has some good info or wants to post some pics of there own Kief hash shakers.. POST UP!!

- three materials work well for shaker in order of easiest to get to best option.

1. Pantyhose ,, when using hose becareful of stretching it to tight or from one side, shaking very very dry herb will become fine and fall through the larger holes... creating low grade hash,,

2. silk screen fabric,, can be bought at art supply houses ,, usually something in the 100-120 strands per inch is good I think (info needed?)
, lasts much longer than pantyhose,, (will last at least a month if used constantly everyday all day by one household),, and finally produces extremely good hash

3. Stainless Steel Mesh fabric,, can be bought at specialty hardware and Ebay,, comes in micron sizes,, Will last 6 mo-one year of use before needing change,, and produces hash of the same quality as silk screen as long as the herb doesn't get bone dry and over beating isn't done.

the silk screenis held down by the lid.. while the SS mesh will be cut to fit.


-The "shaking action" is important to do properly.
1. put ganj and quarters in, then close lid
2. turn upside down and hold close to the end wher the bottom is.. it will be on top.
3.Now shake vigourously side to side like you have the worst case of the hand shakes. (Don't beat it up and down unless your just starting a fresh leafy run). This method will produce the most quantity and quality and is proven by my independant lab testing.

-I try to use a jar with a lid that has a high surface area to volume. That way there is better work space compared to product. ie.. a small pint jar with the open top.

-Two quarters seems to be plenty to knock the shake around in the jar.. but anyone with other ideas.. shoot.


-Because its hand operated YOU decide when to stop soo. Scoop the trichomes with a card every minute or two.. so you can check to see if the color is changing. Changing color = more vegatation = less pure.


-To check to see the quality of your kief.. one test is to press your pile lightly.. if it clumps usually it means its of a higher oil, trichome content.. less clumpy-dusty usually is an indicator of vegatation. (although humidity, clumpyness,quality and- dry, won't clump, les quality.. do go hand in hand. Its def not always the case.. as good quality shake that's dry can produce great Hash... you just can't beat it long. IE the pictured kief here is bone dry but shaken for no more than 2-2.5 minutes.

-for the absolute best quality slighty moist herb as in not bone dry is used.. The reason being the vegatation wont breakdown into small pieces and degrade the final product. But,, you must be patient and sometimes several couple minute sessions are needed to extract from fresher (word choice ) MJ. this is a generality as someone with a good eye, a experienced shaker wrist, and quality shake can produce the best. doesn't matter humid or dry.

I like your idea alot. I do things a bit differently though. I save my leaf material in a jar to the side and make bubble out of it. I do have a kief box that I use when I am processing my herb and putting it into jars. Never shaker but it still collects alot of kief.

Nylon Straining Bag SMALL Fine, These you can find at HomeBrew supply stores and are better than using Nylons. They also make ones with a rubber seal that fit perfect in a jelly jar.

Alright!! nice meeting you guys.. yeah your totally right sqwirl there's tons of ways to have fun with this stuff I'll check out the ways of the sqwirl ... this is just one of the tools in the toolbox.

Really good idea dude. Gonna have to try this. I think a mason jar and a stainless steel mesh would work great. That way you could close it when your done.

lala124.. yeah the SS works the best.. as far as longevity. and I think because it fits into the top of a canning jar.. you don't need any rubber parts or anything.

just cut the ss to fit snug inside of the screw ring.. you won't need glue or anything.. just take your time cutting the SSmesh. (in the top view pic you can see what I'm talking about) and if you use something that's fabric just cut it larger than the ring.. screw down then cut excess later)


Post up a pic if you can when your done. IF you got any ?s ask away.. there's a little bit of technique with the shaking.. so with a little exp. you actually get better w/ time. REMEMBER not up and down.. hold bottom upside down and give it a good palsy shake kinda thing.

DId I mention this stuff tastes better than bubble.. well to each their own but dry skuff seems to have all these great floral hashy notes you just dont get with bub.

+ even if you don't grow.. you can make a personal days worth of hash in 2 minutes from your shake.

I can not find any links for one, but here is a photo. Nothing big, we would take them to the grocery store and match them up to the right size jar, then clean out the jar and you have a Kief Skaker, usually the jar will hold 3.5 to 7.0 grams. Shake a QP over glass and you got a nice collection. One day if I come across my old original set-up, I will photo it and post it up.

Just curious why you feel it has to be replaced so soon. The stainless in my tumbler has lasted over 3 years and only needs to be blown out from time to time

good question chiefsmokingbud . the ss mesh actuall never needs to be changed.. but if you use it alot.. the screen will eventually get clogged somewhat.. (different size screens are going to see different levels of clogging obviously)

for me cutting a new screen was easier than cleaning it..

you could never have the need to clean or change it though.

Keep it in the freezer. Works great. Tric's break off much cleaner.

Well, got all the supplies. Except for the essential, Im outta weed and my dealer skipped town.

a guy called caprischioso did a thread with the same thing, made from a kilner jar like yours((you cant get those over here...strange actually coz the kilners who invented that jar were a very wealthy family in my locale-jeremy clarkson from top gear is related to em)) caprischioso did a couple of versions actually....lol mountains of keif all over a big glass coffee tabletop..... i sure it'll still be in there somehwere...wether the pics are or not tho is a different matter.
I had one of those plastic ones the pollinator company makes called hash maker/polm shaker depending on what country ur in. They work wonderfully well...a bit of a pain in the arse-or more accurately the arms lol but well worth it.

here's a couple of comments/suggestions

synthetic meshes will last for years..I've been using the same set of screen frames for years...and I expect to use them for another few more years.

the main thing to remember is to remove sticks, twigs and branches first and more importantly don't smoke over your mesh.

I would never suggest to use coins (esp inside a glass jar!), balls or other things in the shaker to help the resin heads break off....when the material is dry, aged, cured and cold the resin heads readily detach and fall through....hard objects like metal will help to break up the plant matter into tiny pieces which will fall through with the heads.....

when dry sifting it's best not try to shake too much material at the one time ...an inch/26 mm layer of roughly ground bud or buf leaf is enough.....try to get yourself a wider mouth jar for better results

anyway, jars are not the best thing to use....mainly because the mesh area is too small ..larger mesh areas are much more efficient/better to use

try not to shake your "hash jar" over a table.....as you will probably lose some of the resin heads to the "wind" .....if a glass jar is your thing, then it's best to add a catchment bag to open end of the jar...so when the resin heads fall through the mesh they will collect in the attached "collection" bag ...this could be done with another jar...cut the centers out of the metal lids, glued them together, put in your resiny material, place mesh over one jar's mouth screw on the lid and then screw the other jar on.....zero loss, clean and easy

the ideal range of mesh size for stain/steel or nylon mesh is the same ....approx. ranging from 150 to 120 micron mesh (or 100 to 142 "US Mesh") depending on the strain

I have lots of different meshes but mostly use two ..a 135 then a 110 micron meshes (120 Mesh and then a 140 mesh) for the outdoor sativa strains I mostly grow....(though during the past 12 months I have grown less than in any other year since Raygun held the reins...."....such is life")

most strains can be dry sifted with a fairly wide variety of mesh sizes....technique and the quality of the starting material plays just as an important part as the mesh size when it comes to quality

one way to work out which meshes are best for your strains is with a magnifying glass......magnification is the kiffer's friend!

for dual screen frame sifting I suggest 150 micron mesh and then run the kif through a 125 micron mesh to get blonder "putty"

a micron is one millionth of a metre

because the "micron" is a metric measurement of the distance between the mesh threads or strands, it's the best (more accurate) way to measure metal mesh sizes as they can have a more varied thread thickness than nylon or polyester meshes which tend to be fairly uniform in thread thickness

whereas the standard mesh size measurement in the US is a number folllwed by the word "Mesh" or "US Mesh" which is the count of the number of strands within a linear inch of the mesh ..or Lines Per inch...aka L.P.I.....

stainless steel can be bought from metal mesh specialists (Google it as suggested above)

synthetic meshes are more common and easier to find..I prefer nylon meshes as they are more user friendly for flat screen dry sifting, they have a better feel and sound..especially with dual or triple screening

"Mesh" is often referred to as eg " 100 Mesh" or "120 Mesh" (a photographer's loupe is ideal for identifying the mesh size and they often have CM and Inch markings on the loupe so it's easy to count the number of threads...don't count a whole inch worth of threads..just count a 1/4 of an inch worth and then multiply by 4 to estimate the mesh count..as it's easier on your eyes and is accurate)

damn, those BC kif boxes are expensive for what they are.......but for those who want a make their own kif shaker box, then the steel mesh might be ok ,,( it's a pity they do not state the actual micron measurement because "100 mesh" might have thick or thin threads meaning the mesh holes could be any size)

and the info in "Kif 101 BC style" contains more sales talk and misinformation than actual fact.

check out Gypsy's boxes...11 x 6 x 3.25 inches....beautifully finished in a mirror finish (interior is unlacquered wood, of course) and at lower in price for a similar size and loaded with features.....with dual screen frames for purer hash, there's room inside for a grinder, lighter, papers, small pipe etc and it locks!...I've been using the ash burl wood veneer model for years......I HIGH-ly recommend it
