Im thinking about writing a program that talks to a smoke detector for grow rooms...

Lately in my area, ive seen numerous busts by peoples having a small house fire, the firefighters and police get there and they get busted.

Ive considered writing a program that monitors to see if a smoke alarm goes off in your house.

The best part is, ive figured out a way where you can pop up most smoke alarms solder in 2 wires of a usb cord and thats it...

So it would be rather simple for anyone to do...

what do you guys think?

Having a fire at a grow while your not home will definitely get you busted, so the smoke alarm monitor might be a good idea, but....

to make it effective it needs to be hooked up to some kind of extinguishing system or else whats the point of having it??? Without the extinguishing system, the monitor could alert you to a fire but unless your really close to home its pretty pointless because by the time you get there your house will already be burnt to a crisp and firefighters + police will be there.

So, monitor + extinguishing system sounds like a good idea, is that what you had in mind or did you want the monitor for peace of mind or something else?

Also, were you planning on making the program yourself? Like with Visual Basic or something? or modify an existing program?

hey agnostic,

I like your idea on this. I have a few of my own to share with you. I have been thinking of automating my theoretical grow using a PIC chip(coded with PicBasic Pro)...Use an internal clock to trigger a relay for HID lights, control 12v fans to maintain a temperature of between 75 and 88. I would like to add bluetooth to send data to my computer, such as temp and maybe the state of a smoke detector. Then build a website and feed this information to the site so it could be monitored remotely.

I also found this that may be of interest to you
Txt Message controlled Relays - http://www.serasidis.gr/circuits/smscontrol/smscontroller.htm

if the website says fire, trip the electric via txt message(if its not done by the breakers first) and close contacts(or open) to release something such as what mysticals suggested. fire fighting from across the world if need be. haha maybe I can claim that once i've put this system into action, but right now its a pipe dream, thats slowly coming to life.

food for thought man, if you do anything with a smoke detector please fill us in, i love hearing different idea's and thought maybe you would like to hear some aswell. good luck

most fires are caused by over-amping the circuit, or bad wiring. Just check all that and you are no more at risk than any other appliance in your house. Accidents do happen, and it sucks to think about it. I always have about 6 Amps overhead on a 20 Amp circuit...actually more like 8 amps.

the autoextinguisher is a good safety measure though.

keep us updated on your project,

peace

also, to anyone who's interested in this geeky stuff - ezweblynx has hardware to completly control this stuff. costs alittle more, but I think the amount of time you spend going this route will be significantly shorter. All the hardware is done, and about as close to plug and play as customized control goes. The software looks pretty badass. like frontpage for website or something..

check out their applications page to cut through that jargon and get a clear point of what can be done.

hope this helps

wow glad its so simple that all of us can do it too...sign me up i can solder. Got a tech with pics and we are golden. oh and just that lil program you made we might all need too for this custom DIY to work. right? so hook it up already
