I just Googled, "firefox tor button" (without quotes) and the results came back with info about Torbutton (where to download it, as well). You need to install it to be able to turn Tor on and off in the Firefox browser.

Hope this helps.

Well, I got the button installed and seem to works. Once i click on the button. I lost my signal. My firefox can't find my home page, IE Yahoo. I'm guess, one of my settings is off or something. Been reading the FAQ, but still nothing. Any helps? Thanks all and can't wait to get this all taken care of.

Firefox is cool because you can set rulesets to only use the proxy on certain sites of your choice... will automatically switch between live and proxy connection depending on what address your visiting.

PS. Is there any way to spend up the loading of the pages?
Thanks

The slowness of pages is due to the extra paths and encryption the data packets take. The trade off is Speed vs. Privacy. Not much you can do.

I remember the days of 300 baud modems, an extra 30-60 seconds to load a page is nothing.

Really if you're using tor you should make a new username and delete all your old posts. The whole point of tor is that if (God forbid!) ic got raided and their server logs were taken, the IP address in the logs wouldn't help them find you. If you start using tor now, some of your posts will have nice anonymous tor IP addresses, but all your old posts will still have the old IP address. There's still not much chance of them finding you from that, but then you might as well not use tor.

I don't grow or anything like that, so I'm not worried about IP logs and such. However I am a bit of an expert on computer security - if I had access to the ic server, I could find your (real) IP address, no matter how much you use tor from now on. To have any real anonymity you need to fire up tor, get a free email account, sign up for a new username here using that email account, then make sure you never access ic with that username without running tor. That way you're pretty much untraceable.

Posts have Ip addresses ? I thought our IP's were only active when viewing. Once something is up , it's on the server, not streaming from our computers. It's like walking in and out of a building and leaving a package. If no one sees you going in and out , there is just a package ( or post) left behind.

Am I wrong?

That depends on how ic is configured and what their upstream provider is doing. A lot of people get their hand on ic's data before/after the actual icservers. A lot of phpbb type scripts will save IP addresses for every post/action - it helps track down hackers, bugs and multiple accounts. ic might be nice enough not to do that, but I think it's standard. This: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=209763 suggests that the admin needs to do some coding to clear IP logs.

Even if ic doesn't log IPs heavily, their hosts and the people who provide the bandwidth to them might do so. This is a bit paranoid, but that's why you want to use tor, right? ;-P

I've used tor in the past for much heavier things than posting on icmag, and I trust it very much. The actual technology is shit-hot, but it needs to be used properly to be 100% sure you're getting real security. If I wanted to post here anonymously, I'd do everything through tor - account creation, email and so on. If you never do anything at all related to growing without using tor, you're as safe as it's possible to be without some really clever stuff.

OKay... used Rez's help thread. Mine works hundred percent. I now live in London!

But one thing. I understand what its purpose is , but do you then have to use it ALL the time to ensure your privacy on OG , or could you use it say only when you post??

If you right click the text Tor Enabled/Tor Disabled and go to preferences, you can set it to icon which makes the text an onion which I personally prefer to use.

You can also right click the green onion, go to network and click new identity until you find faster connections.
