hi there everybody, ive got a problem with bloody root mites, yes you heard right i said root mites, the look a bit similar to spider mites, but live in the rootzone and feed in the same way as fungus gant larvae on ur roots. Sorry no pic, i cant get one down my dope scope.
Basically i want to know if any1 else has had these and successfuly dealt with them, if so what did you do.
The ask ed column in soft secrets recommends pyrthrum directly to the rootzone like either a drench or mixed in the nutrient tank. Im struggling to find a suitable pyrethrum in the uk, i can get pyrethroids but not pyrethrum and not suitable as root drench. Please if someone cant point out a product i would be most appreciative.
thanks guys

I know a little hydrogen-peroxide will send the fungus gnats a packing, might be worth a try on the root mites.

HG, drop NGT a PM.. or link him to this thread..

I *believe the correct term for yer pest is 'root aphids' and by the sounds of it they are indeed some very nasty fuckers..

I know NGT has had them and has had to deal with them, and he's the only one i know of who has..

I hope that helps, and i hope you can get it under control..

I had these before, had em recently too. The way i kill em is using a diluted organic pyrethrum (sp) with ph'd water. Bugbuster - O is what i use. Basically i dipped my cuts in container filled with the Bugbuster/water mix. Then an hour or so later i come back and dip my my cuts in pure ph water to "wash off" the pyrethrum. You should see a gang of dead root aphids after that :woohoo:

Also i've heard dutchmaster's Zone works for some people but for me it's not good enough. There's a product called Botanigard that is like a fungus that attached itself to the backs of the aphids and they some how rub against one another to spread it amongst the troops. I've never used it but it's supposedly good. I know the Bugbuster w/ water works every time. I was told i can mix the product with your nutes but i dunno about all that....

When you see that stuff in a container fizzing and bubbling for over 24 hours you will probably think twice about adding it to your nutes, and think four times before dipping your plants in there :D It does work tho. Good luck

Hi, Unless root aphid is just a nickname for them then i dont think they are it, they are a mite, looking eerily similar to spider mites, except they live in the root zone, is the aphid part of root aphid just a nickname for them?? Ive checked em out under the scope, and looked in a glasshouse pests book, and they were referred to as root mites in soft secrets(which was a mad coincidence because id just found em that day when i got the same magazine it is in)
I found a pyrethrum spray-which im gonna get to have around, but i called the supplier and they say no it cant be used in the root zone, ive found a pyrethrum that can be used in the root zone, but its for ornamentals so i cant use that is im to carry on living by only using things that are ok for edibles....
Well ill kepp looking round and see what i find, thanks for ur help

Do you have pics of the effect it has on the plants?

SM-90 works on fungus gnat larvae, maybe that would work on those little bastards too.
