Blue Moon Rocks under LEDs

Hello everyone!

This grow was done in 2014. It was a seed run but also for head stash.

the specifics:

grow space: 60cm x 60cm x 160cm grow tent (2' x 2' x 5'4'')

light: 9 COB LED grow evolution bud boss 343

medium: soil, pre-made mix, mostly vermiculite, little coco and little perlite, not a good mix.

ventilation: little fan moving air inside the tent and a good extractor pulling through a carbon filter, good negative pressure for sure.

nutrients: a bottled sea-weed based bio-fertilizer, don't recall the exact values, but something like 7-7-7 plus micro nutrients, used as single food source throughout the whole cycle.

cultivar: BOG's Blue Moon Rocks.

Container size: started in super small containers, moved into 3.5 liters (1 gallon) and finally into 11 liters (3 gallons give or take).

Here you see the little plants, seeds were planted straight into the soil in these little cups

you can easily see the slow growth, all due to failing to provide these plants enough space for root development. I was used to growing outdoors in the tropical Andes and mainly narrow leaf types which can grow big in small containers.

since germination they were under a 18/6 photoperiod, overkill imho.

these little plants deprived of root space did produce a lot of inter-nodes separated from each other super tightly. imo, not a good thing, no room for the buds to fully develop.

few days after finally transplanting into 3.5 liter pots. they really liked the extra space for sure!

btw, 10/10 seeds germinated, however, 3 were stunts or stunted by root-space restriction and/or the environment.

I think this was after a light defoliation, as these Blue Moon Rocks produce some huge fan/shade leaves and imo were blocking the light to the lower parts of the plant and decided to prune them away.

I think I pruned a few more leaves.

these are still under 18/6 light cycle.

which was another mistake imo, not enough dark period to let them stretch, as these bmr don't stretch a lot once flipped to 12/12.
and the light out of these LEDs also seem to encourage short internode spacing.

the plants were flipped into 12/12 after 60 days of 18/6, counting from when the plants cracked out of the soil. way too much time wasted the first 30 days on those tiny containers. lesson learned, these are not sativas / narrow leaf!

2 out of the 5 females that came along. there were 2 males and 3 runts.

the males were topped and pruned heavily to keep them small but healthy, this is one of them also on november 17

the five females, one phenotype stretched more its main cola, but it kept good internode spacing.
the others were pretty uniform though.

Wow abrupt jump in time... 4 females, in 11 liter containers, nicely pollinated already.

so 1 of the 5 females was taken out to try and finish her next to a window, getting a few hours of direct sun-light, she did alright, but have no pictures of her or of the second male...

another abrupt jump in time:

a little "bleaching" from the LEDs' light.

don't have pictures of december 25, the day they were chopped. they flowered for 55 days though, and all seeds were mature and nice. and the flowers had very nice floral, light berry and sweet aromas.

these plants are very pretty and worth growing them, specially if you know how to treat them well (not like I did).

very important things for this variety is root-space and a good medium. the medium I used did not drain the best and was super poor in nutrient content from the start.

Also, better feeding would be great for her, specially in mid vegetative stage, start of flower and mid flowering.

she can handle cool temps as well as higher temps and temperature fluctuation no problems, same goes for RH, within reason of course.

a couple of dry shots plus seeds:

a little quality arak to keep oneself warm during those winter days of course.

the dry buds smoked smoothly, with a nice taste and a very relaxing quality high.

one thing that BOG said that I found to be true, is that sometimes the experience with these buds can be nice and relaxing and sometimes a little trippy, in a good mild way though, very enjoyable and quite strange too.

I'm used to trippy Colombian narrow leaf varieties and some Africans, and these bmr lack that psychedelic punch, however, the blue moon rocks are a fine smoke and I'm super glad I made seeds so will be able to enjoy her more in the future and provide for her a better environment and surely thus will provide an even better experience.

the buds were not fluffy at all, they were dense, not rock hard though, but pretty dense nonetheless.

I really want to see these completely seedless and grown in a better environment. The harvest time when I took them down was pretty good imo, they could have gone longer for sure, but I like to trip a bit, not all is about sitting on the couch :D

This was a very nice learning experience for me, it was my second attempt at indoor growing, and it is really harder than outdoors imo, but it has its cool things, you feel more like a mad scientist than a farmer, specially under the color of the LEDs' light... under the Sun you grow and feel the beauty of nature, under the LEDs it is like growing in a secret chamber of the mother-ship!

Well, I hope you have enjoyed this journal of this little and humble grow.

much peace and good health to you all :)
