After 20 years of battling the US government for use of his family's land, a Nevada rancher’s “one-man range war” may soon end. The family says heavily-armed federal agents have surrounded the ranch as "trespass cattle” are removed from the disputed land.
Cliven Bundy – the “last rancher in Clark County, Nevada” – has since 1993 refused to pay fees to the federal government for the right to raise cattle on land his family has ranched since the 1870s, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
After years of legal wrangling, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) attained a federal court order to have Bundy’s nearly 1,000 head of cattle removed, according to the family.
Bundy says the government is taking the task seriously, arming the agents with military-style weaponry.
“They’re carrying the same things a soldier would,” he told the Free Beacon. “Automatic weapons, sniper rifles, top communication, top surveillance equipment, lots of vehicles. It’s heavy soldier type equipment.”
Carol Bundy, Cliven’s wife, said hundreds of armed BLM and FBI agents are set up around their property, as helicopters circle the area, and nearby roads remain off limits.
“We’re surrounded,” Carol Bundy said. “We’re estimating that there are over 200 armed BLM, FBI. We’ve got surveillance cameras at our house, they’re probably listening to me talk to you right now.”
As of Monday, the government agents and their contractors have seized 234 of the 908 cattle. The removal will cost the federal government as much as US$3 million, the Free Beacon reported.

“The battle’s been going on for 20 years,” Cliven Bundy said. “What’s happened the last two weeks, the United States government, the bureaus are getting this army together and they’re going to get their job done and they’re going to prove two things. They’re going to prove they can do it, and they’re gonna prove that they have unlimited power, and that they control the policing power over this public land. That’s what they’re trying to prove.”
The family said their son, Dave Bundy, was arrested for taking photos of state road 170, which had been closed by BLM. Dave was aggressively apprehended by officials for “failure to comply with multiple requests by BLM law enforcement to leave the temporary closure area on public lands.”
Carol Bundy said five agents took Dave and “threw him on the ground.”
“One put his knee on his head, the other put his boot on his head and pushed him into the gravel,” she said. “He’s got quite a bruised head. Just bruised him up pretty good.”
A National Park Service spokesperson denied that armed guards were confiscating cattle, though she did confirm “security” is present to keep contractors safe after they supposedly received threats.

“Contractors are here and they are in place to round-up the cattle and to bring them to the impound area,” Christie Vanover said. “As for security, there [is] security in place, but that is merely to protect the contractors.”
BLM defends their actions in removing the “trespass cattle” as necessary since Bundy did not “voluntarily” move the cattle after refusing to pay back fees for use of the land.
In 1998, BLM designated 186,909 acres of the Gold Butte area, where the ranch is, as “critical” for the survival of the desert tortoise population. Bundy had lost his grazing permit in 1993 despite his family’s long-time presence on the land.
BLM says Bundy owes around $1 million in fees, while the family contends that the sum is more like $300,000.
“I’m a producer,” Cliven said. “I produce edible commodity from the desert forage, and all of these things are governed under state law. So, in other words, this type of government has eliminated all of our state law, eliminated our state sovereignty, and has took control over our public lands and even took control over our Clark County sheriff. They’ve taken the whole county over. The whole state, almost.”
The Bundys said their appeals to local and state law enforcement and other authorities have proved futile. “This is just about power of the government,” Carol said.
“Our sheriff says he just doesn’t have authority, our governor says he doesn’t have authority, and we’re saying, why are we a state?” asked Carol.
In a further display of power, BLM has cordoned off “First Amendment Areas” as designated spots where demonstrators are allowed by BLM to gather and protest the action.
This aspect of the cattle removal has caught the attention of Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval.
“Most disturbing to me is the BLM’s establishment of a ‘First Amendment Area’ that tramples upon Nevadans’ fundamental rights under the US Constitution,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
“To that end, I have advised the BLM that such conduct is offensive to me and countless others and that the ‘First Amendment Area’ should be dismantled immediately,” he said. “No cow justifies the atmosphere of intimidation which currently exists or the limitation of constitutional rights that are sacred to all Nevadans. The BLM needs to reconsider its approach to this matter and act accordingly.”
Sandoval added that his office had received other complaints about BLM, including road closings and “other disturbances.”

The trouble started when Bundy stopped paying grazing fees in 1993. He said he didn't have to because his Mormon ancestors worked the land since the 1880s, giving him rights to the land.

The 1st Amendment areas sound a bit sketchy to me but if it's a matter of keeping protesters from stopping others from doing their job then I support it. 1st amendment rights do not include stopping someone from doing their job.
I normally wouldn't support the govt in a move like this but I can see that the other ranchers have all complied and this cheap fuck has been working the system for decades.

This is the way I heard it explained. If you just look a bit deeper than the cry of "the feds are taking away our rights," the real situation becomes quite clear. I was listening to a late night talk show last night, and the host was asking this guy, who typically comes to the defense of people in this rancher's situation, how he felt about it. The guy said that he couldn't come to this rancher's defense, basically because of what S4L said in his post above.

I think your misinterpreting the word "we" and that's where you're missing the point.
"We" own this land as in the resident's of the state own the land not the Feds. That's why he's willing to pay the state and not the jackboot Feds.

Well, I don't know when the Feds decided to start charging "grazing fees" on open range, but they never existed years ago and certainly not in the 140+ years that this man's family has been using that range. It used to be common practice for ranchers and sheep men to graze their animals all over in the areas that I've lived, and there were no "fees" involved - apparently somewhere along the line, the Feds decided that they could soak some money out of people for doing it, even though they haven't put out a nickel for improvements or anything else to justify the fees. The animals actually help mitigate fire danger.
This whole thing doesn't pass the smell test - as I said above, this family has been running cattle there since the 1870's and somehow the desert tortoise managed to coexist with the cattle without federal intervention.

Negating of course the preexisting natural rights, like our right to our lives, the right to make a living and own property and free association.
The government being the most suited for violence, will win. The states took the land from the original inhabitants, now the states will have it taken by the federal government. Anyone in the way will die.
The sheep will cheer.

my missing that point of 'we' has nothing to do with the meat of this. BLM/feds probably lorded over this land for 100+ years. He stopped paying the BLM in '93 and in '98 grazing there became forbidden because of the turtles, that shit happens, spotted owls etc...

Hey bro, I lived inside the Chippewa National forest for years, standard permits were drawn through county offices for all regulated matters (building, sewage, logging etc) but when it came to applications for variances it all had to clear through the USDA, the Forestry division and in most water issues the Army Corps of Engineers.
it's only my guess or assumption that the BLM owns a huge area surrounding the grazing grounds, much more area than is being debated. the roads, homes, ranches etc are likely all on federal land, in reality the Governor would be powerless to stop what's going on. and the feds who might be acting like fuckwads themselves are gonna have every right to claim they need X amount (lots & lots) of room to perform the seizure. closing roads? yup. keeping protestors away? yup.
Here's another thing, in the back of magazines for years were ads about buying 80 acres with only $15 down & $15 a month. This was all BLM land that was certainly for sale at one time or another, almost always offered first to those living on it or leasing it for grazing or mining/mineral rights. Eventually the sale of most BLM lands ceased.
The federal govt doesn't want to own land, the state doesn't want to own land either, nor the county, it costs them money to own land and no taxes can be collected on it; which is why the ranchers would rather pay fees than own, Bundy wound up doing neither, didn't own it or pay his fees.
I'll bet that the Bundy family was offered to buy the land at some point as he claims ancestral history back to the 1870 or 1880's, but leasing land is so much cheaper so ranchers would rather lease or pay grazing fees as the case may be.

Have you seen the cost estimates for this little fiasco? $3.3 million to round up a 1000 head of cattle. Half a dozen cowboys on 4-wheelers could easily do it in less than a week, but the Feds need $3.3 million? Absurd. Other interesting math - as of 3 years ago, the feds & Bundy agree that he owed roughly $300,000. Since then it has jumped to $1.1 million. The fee is $1.35/month/animal. So, 1000 head x 1.35 =$1350 x 36 months = $48,600. It sounds like they must have taken common core mathematics at the BLM.

Wake up people!!! in the years since 1993 beef prices have risen drastically, a lot of those costs can be associated with increased costs of the ranchers, this guy paid NONE of those increases and in fact he paid NOTHING!!! But when he took his cows to market he was paid the prime rate.
