Tap root growing upward?

So I have 5 African Durban Poison seeds in some small peat pots. So far one has broken the surface and it has been since it was in the pot for about 2 days (it's about day 5 or 6 now). I don't see any green. I just dropped the seeds in and didn't face them any particular direction. I think what I am seeing is the tap root growing upward and out of the dirt. Is this possible? It's in the air and it's white. I may have to get a pic later. The tip has several small hair on it. Should I just take it out and turn it the other way so the root faces downward? Thanks guys!

I think what you are seeing is the stem that is showing while it is bent over. It will stand up and the leaves will be there. Do not play with it or you could easily kill it....

Anyone else have anything at all to say about this? I really don't think it's the right side of the plant. Pics will come when I can get them later on.

Sounds like it is the plumule (tap root)..don't touch the root with your finger..dig the seed carefully and flip it over..
You could keep it covered with a little dirt..it might tap down eventually..but the plumule is what jacks the seed out too, so you may have to wait this way..
Myself I'd flip it..obviously it isn't anchored in yet.. My :2cents:

^^^ What I'm thinking. I'm going to go flip it now. Thanks.

I dont thikn thats possible that the root would grow upside down. Either way the root knows that what it needs is in within the soil and stimulates that root to grow in that direction even if the root sticks up it would end up turning and going back down. What you see is something ive seen in a couple plants. Its a little tiny white root which ends up growing a couple small leaves and died.

Update for the sake of the community out there. The plant was actually growing upside down. I dug the small kid out of the dirt yesterday and snaped a few pics and flipped it around how it was supposed to be. Here are some pics of the root growing upward.

First day I noticed.

About 3 or 4 days later.

After I flipped it over, you can clearly see the leaves, maybe not in the pics, but trust me, they are there and were very yellow (because of the lack of light and being in the dirt I suppose).

That is crazy..I thought you just had a little tail...the damn thing is going a long way but can't find the soil...like a little alien.. :yoinks:
Hope she survives...and leave her under weak light until she can get settled in and get chlorophyll into the leaves..
Basically treat her like a fresh clipped clone right now..

wow what happend with that and what type of grow do you plan on running. I swear stuff like this doesn't happen if you do it the old fashion way just throw a germ'd seed with the root down or even side ways and wait for a sprout.

I transplanted a bunch of tomato plants from dixie cups to grow bags last night, and 4 of them had roots that grew down to the bottom and then started growing upwards. One was almost ready to poke through the soil. The bottom of the cups were a bit too moist, so I figure the root was just looking for a more comfortable place to grow into.

Cheers,

Yeah, it's normal now, the other seeds haven't even broken soil yet like wtf?! The one that is out has been out forever...it's just rootbound now so it's not growing for shit. I'll put it in some soil in a few days I suppose.

In my opinion, peat pellets are a waste of time for beginners: they can easily get soggy. Personally, I use rockwool and once the seeds pop up I drop the cube into some soil in a cup. the rockwool is perfect because they can be watered like crazy but as long as you let excess drain they never get too wet. The seedlings that grow the fastest are often the ones that are least interfered with, so next time you plant some seeds(dont quit now, in fact you learn more from making mistakes than you do from better grows) make sure the seed is at a good depth and with proper orientation.

cheers, martin

I've had the tap root stick up like that several times. Since my eyesight has decreased it happens more. It is caused by placing the seed in the soil up side down. Instead of the seed popping and the tap root curling under, it curls up. The plants wont survive. I'll tell you what I tell myself- Pay more attention next time.
