Bean -> Bonsai -> Clone -> MicroSOG (BBCMSG)

My goal for this thread is to document the power of this site as an educational tool.

Before January of 2013, I'd never grown anything other than throwing a few tomato seeds in the yard and hope they grow. I decided to give growing a shot for a number of reasons, but treat it as I have most hobbies ... I'm borderline obsessive, but no guarantee I'll keep on.

Anyway, I found this site and started reading, eventually I decided to pop a seed and start hands on learning. I made a few mistakes starting and was down to my last bean scewing around, but I finally got it right. Managed to go from that 1 bean to a Bonsai, figured out cloning and started a micro SOG ala DrBudGreengenes.

Yes, at the end of the day, most of my process, setup and method is straight DrBud, but that is a bit over-simplistic as I read and learned from many many others on this site.

Anyway, I just got a few new beans and I'm going to give some new strains a whirl (everything I have right now is White Rhino) and document the process as best I can ...

I still consider myself a beginner, what I hope to do is encourage other newbies and show what's possible right out of the gate
with just a little reading.

Here's my new girls! I'll be popping them to germ this evening.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRLS!

Two days in wet paper towels in a zip lock bag on a window sill and I have 3 little sprouts! Into small cups they go -- about 3 oz.

1 Barneys Farm Tangerine Dream
1 Black Skull Jack Herer
1 Female Seeds C99

picture.php

My soil is 5 parts big box potting soil, 3 parts perlite and 1 part vermiculite. After putting the seeds into the soil, into the mom, clone, veg cab they go ..

picture.php

Cab is a 39 Gal Rubbermaid container ... badly sprayed flat white inside. A single 42W 6700 spectrum CFL for light and a 120mm computer case fan for exhaust, intakes are passive.

Moms are off to the far right and will get a chop this weekend, there are a couple of small vegging plants that will go into SOG flower this weekend as well in front of the moms. All of the small plants are newly rooted clones that I put into soil yesterday. The clone chamber is underneath the newly rooted ones. It's a small loc'n'lock that has saturated perlite/vermiculite in it.

The three new girls are at the top right under the light. Cab runs 24/0.

That's it for today!

A tale of three seeds ...

A tale of three seeds ...

So here we are 12 days after the seeds cracked ...

picture.php

Vastly different results.

First, RIP to Little Jack Herer ... while he crack the bean case, he just never made it to the light of day :( ... Bummer dude.

My little tangerine girl has taken her dear sweet time emerging too, I've seen her just sitting there under the surface for 3 or 4 days before finding her above soil this morning with a couple real leaves to boot.

Cindy? Well she's an ambitious, stretchy little bitch ... she's been up for a week at this point with two full sets of leaves, I filled her cup with more potting mix this morning after I took this.

In the immortal words of Meatloaf "Two out of three ain't bad"

All for now!

U know what's up that's always a good way to go when they stretch u could probally fill that cup almost all the way and have one short strong plant there. PS gotta love them fem seeds...

Here we are 3 weeks from seed ... Cindy is looking strong and healthy, if I were truly following DrBud's approach I'd whack her head off already, but I'm going to let her go for a while before cloning ...

Tangerine is a really really slow start here. Other than slow growth I don't have any clue to problems, same soil as Cindy and my other plants ... started same time, yet still such a runt.

OK, so the big day for Cindy has arrived .... time to give birth! Here she is to start:

picture.php

Just about 3" tall, strong and healthy. Here's here baby, chopped, trimmed, a little rooting hormone and in perlite/vermiculite mix:

And finally, here's mom after the procedure:

We're 22 days from seed here and taking our first clone ... all praise Dr. Bud.

All for now.

Another week has passed. Tangerine Dream has finally taken off and Cindy is responding quite well to being topped for a clone. Here they are today, before I top the Tangerine Dream to take the first clone of her:

picture.php

And here is a picture of TD after being topped:

picture.php

Finally here's a shot of my clone box, the new TD cut is at top right, the C99 cut I took last week is bottom right, she'll be rooted in a couple more days and potted -- haven't decided if I'll flower her right away or use her as a second mom for a while.

So here we are less than a week from cracking seeds and we have clones of both strains and the moms are looking good.

All for now!

Today 33 days from seed I have my first rooted clone of C99 (after 12 days in perlite/vermiculite):

picture.php

I've decided I'm going to have a little fun with her and enter her in the Fall Yogurt Cup Challenge, so here she is in her new home:

picture.php

I've put her back in the mom/clone box for a couple days to let her roots establish, I'll make the actual entry into the contest mid week or so. The C99 mom is growing nicely, I could take more cuts already, but I'm letting her branch a bit first.

Tangerine Dream did not like being topped ... she's been verrrrry slow to start growing again, she is growing again, but it obviously stressed her much more than Cindy.

OK, we're starting to fire on all cylinders now! Here's C99 ready to give up some more cuts; the first rooted Tangerine Dream clone potted in a yogi cup next to her:

picture.php

And here she is after giving up 6 cuts:

picture.php

The cuts form an "L" along the right and bottom of the clone box:

And finally here's a closer shot of the Tangerine girl, I'll enter/flower her in the yogi cup challenge next week:

So 5 weeks in, C99 is a productive Mom, able to give me enough for feeding my weekly perpetual SOG ... and *wow* does she smell amazing, even in veg! Wonderful citrus scent ... not like weed at all!

Tangerine Dream mom is growing again, probably won't do much with her for a couple weeks, she really struggled with the first cut I took of her, even though that cut rooted a couple days ahead of schedule (to my schedule that is).

Nice job dude, I'll be keeping an eye on this I have something similar in mind, I just cut my cheese candy seedling after she was about 18 days old I think my cutting wasn't big enough though I still have my hopes high though lets see how it looks in a few days.

Deftoner

I grew the same c99. The citrus smell will turn to a straight skunk smell with about 3weeks before harvest.

Thanks for stopping by maulwusrt! Good luck with yours. Works really well for me.

Deftoner, I'll be disappointed if that happens, but it is what it is. First cut is 2 weeks into 12/12 now and just starting to show flowers. Guess we'll see in about 5 weeks.

No pictures today, but I've done a few things. Both the C99 and TD moms have been up potted to cut down 32oz PowerAid bottles, probably 20-24 oz of soil/root space.

4 of 6 of the last C99 clones have rooted, other 2 have a couple days more I think.

Took 6 more C99 and 2 TD cuts on Saturday, so starting to have a steady stream of clones, these will veg/root for a week and then the next group of plants into my perpetual SOG will be C99 ... just about 7 weeks from bean crack. Granted I only need 4 plants a week so I'm not setting the world on fire with this, but I think I've proved what can be done in a short time with minimal resources.

I'm going to keep posting through first harvest at least, but I'd call it a win right now :)

wow loving how small the cuts you took were mine are a bit bigger, still new to cloning myself. but im pretty impressed with yours, also love the Rubbermaid idea i think i will get one for my clones :D, what did you add with the verm in the cloning chamber ? :)

littlegrow: yep, they are small cuts, all under 2", some a bit smaller even.

The clone box is about half and half perlite / vermiculite ... I have another that is much more perlite than vermiculite (maybe 5:1?) ... it works just as well. Having the box closed (humidity) and kept warm (72-76) with not too much light is the key. Otherwise, they just kind of take care of themselves ... just have to give them a little air exchange every day or so (open lid, air out, close it up)
