Seattle tells state regulators it wants pot tourism
Posted by Bob Young

The city of Seattle embraces pot tourism and wants state regulators to consider allowing private clubs for visitors to consume marijuana in, according to a letter sent to state regulators by City Attorney Pete Holmes.

Mayor Mike McGinn supports the letter. City Council President Sally Clark said the council has not formally approved it. “That’s not to say anybody wouldn’t be on board with it,” Clark said. “But I haven’t had enough involvement with the detail yet to know if I’d want to sign on to the letter.”

The letter from Holmes, a sponsor of the state’s new adult recreational pot law, was sent Monday, the last day for comments on the state’s initial draft rules for a legal seed-to-store system.

It also asked the state Liquor Control Board to allow outdoor growing — which would likely occur east of the Cascades — and study the possibility of allowing delivery services.

As for private clubs, the new pot law does not allow consumption “in view of the general public.” Other state laws allow landlords to bar tenants from smoking, and they prohibit tourists from lighting up in bars, restaurants and most hotel rooms. ”For renters and tourists, allowing marijuana use in certain types of establishments other than private residents (sic) may be the only mechanism to enjoy marijuana.”

“This is both a race & social justice and an economic development issue,” the letter continued. “Renters and tourists should not be forced to use marijuana in parks or sidewalks.”

A spokesman for the liquor board, which is charged with creating rules for the new system, said private clubs and delivery services have not been viewed favorably in staff discussions. But he noted that the appointed board members have final say on decisions.

There are two apparent ways for tourists to work around existing rules when state-regulated stores open next year. They could buy and consume pot-infused edibles or liquids. Or, they could vaporize their pot using devices that heat marijuana and release key chemicals without igniting dried plant matter. Instead of creating smoke, users inhale vapors.

no public smoke out.... keep it private...the law is very liberal , just don't flaunt it... or rub it in there face....part of the gimmick w/ i502, is the tourist.... taking advantage of these laws... and following them accordingly those that go buck wild... will then be paying the price in Seattle court....

Yes and if you go to n'tl areas then do not be loud. Do not throw garbage in the water. Be friendly to the n'tl govt workers

No.

Per the law you cannot consume in view of the public. If you are in "private" (hotel room, apartment) and it is a non-smoking facility you may not smoke but you can cape it consume edibles.

To smoke 420 without breaking the rules you must be out of view of the public and in a place that smoking is allowed.

If you are in a place that you can legally drink a beer and smoke a cigarette then you can smoke a joint.

SWEET!

before this bill even passed we were all hoping Seattle or Denver would become the U.S. Amsterdam. I really hope they can pull this off.

I'll just stay the hermit I am and smoke when and where I wish while I watch the State Gov fumble around with regulating peoples' Natural Rights and tax you for the privilege of the "States Blessing" on something they have no authority over.

If your not medical your best bet for recreational sales is delivery. Club raccoons, Seattle gardens express, both I can recommend. Cheaper and better quality than the storefronts. Even got some super fire chem d off Craigslist, and made a contact whom used for 200 dollar ounces of fire, compared to the 60 dollar eighths of schwagg from the storefronts

Cool thanks. It is interesting to watch the legal pot scene grow. Hopefully store fronts will catch up on the quality

Is there a quality issue with the I520 retailers? I'm into legal options only, so can't compare, but the stuff I've been getting is great as far as I'm concerned.

The retailers don't make it, they just stock up what they can get from I520 farms. The farms are probably still sorting things out, and no doubt there are better and worse farms. If you discriminating customers assert yourselves and the best stuff flies off the shelf, it's all going to get better. For various reasons I tend to look for eastern Washington farms, like Buddy Boy near Spokane and Life Gardens in Ellensburg, but my impression is that all the I520 farms are busting their butts in a very challenging and competitive business.

pot tourism never really took off it seems.

Maybe not in Seattle, but it has in CO. Maybe that's because tourism of one sort or another is a major industry in CO.

It leads to all kinds of stupid contradictions. CO govt says it's not the reason for an upswing in tourism (nudge-nudge, wink-wink) while Nebraska & Oklahoma are having shit fits suing CO in federal court.

Tour buses are an interesting take on it all with the luggage compartments likely having more cannabis in them on the way home than any dozen tourist cars that OK troopers ever busted. It doesn't take much imagination to figure out how to work that.

Should the suit fail, which seems likely, they'll know they're fucked. At some point or another, they'll be forced to yield.
