Log Cabin in the wilderness

After a tour of duty in Vietnam, US ARMY Infantry, combat medic, I returned to a US I didn't fit in.
I was discharged from Ft Lewis Wa in 1970. I had inherated enough money from my grandparents to buy 40 acres of forest land in Washngton state, right along the Canadian border.
My wife & I spent 3 years building&living in, this log cabin in the wilderness. From the cabin you could walk 20 miles into Canada, before you came to a road.
5 miles of 4 wheel drive road to get there. All logs came from the land.
No electricity, we built everything buy hand, done with rigging & block&tackle (you can see it n the pictures) I did use a gasoline chainsaw.
These pictures were taken 1970-73.

The center ridge pole was 18" thick & over 40ft long & probably weighed 1000lbs. I had a picker factor of +10 when we got it off the ground!

Life in the wilderness!

Life in the wilderness!

We moved into the cabin after the first winter. Stayed 2 more years. My wife wanted to go to nursing school, so we moved to Seattle & I got a job at Boeing.
It was a hard life out there. My wife didn't appreciate the solitude as much as I
We no longer have the cabin

Subsistance living

Subsistance living

We lived off the grid. Raised our own food, chickens, pigs, garden.
There was a creek about a mile behind the cabin with rainbow trout like this

P.S. The hardest part of being a combat medic is that every time you lost one, your looking right into their eyes.
I would see they're faces every time I closed my eyes, & was having nightmares almost every night.
I found out later, that my poor wife was scared sh*tless the whole time!

worth 1000 words!

When I went to interview for a job at Boeing the Mgr asked me "what have you been doing since getting out of the Army?"
I just showed him these pics, & he said "Your hired" lol!
And they don't build log cabins at Boeing!

P.S. When I went to apply at Boeing, they had a sign in the window, "Not accepting applications, except veterans"

hey doublejj, just wondering why you said you didnt fit in when you got back?

was it because you were a soldier that fought in vietnam and the public was against you guys? or was it because you didn't personally like to be around people because of the PTSD that may have haunted you post war?

i know that many medics have the worst PTSD because of the guilt associated with the fact that they (you) just could not save everybody and because they (you) HAD to watch many die as you stood helpless?

i never understood why the public was so against vietnam veterans.... after all, many of them had no choice and were drafted to either go to vietnam and risk death or stay home and be imprisoned...

were u a pinball wizard or did you volunteer?

you dont have to answer any of these questions, i just am a real big fan of the military and an even bigger fan of the people who were/are part of the military no matter the branch...
