Growers charged with child abuse

Crazy..

DENVER - Two parents are facing charges of child abuse after investigators discovered a marijuana grow operation in their home where they lived with three children, ages 7, 9 and 11.

The Denver District Attorney's Office says 29-year-old Joseph Daniel Lightfoot and 29-year-old Amber Brooke Wildenstein are each charged with one count of child abuse.

Investigators say Lightfoot and Wildenstein have been growing large amounts of marijuana in their home on South Williams Street near East Vassar Avenue.

Denver Police went to their home in early June on a report of domestic violence.

Both Lightfoot and Wildenstein are each free on a $50,000 bond. Both are set to appear in court in July to be advised of the charges against them.

They were charged under a state statue that says a person commits child abuse if they knowingly engage in the manufacture or attempted manufacture of a controlled substance in a place where a child is living.

Most things associated w MMj & a bust pisses me off...

It is fair to suggest, however, that in today's society... this is predictable.

1. Why would you put your kids in the same place as any potentially criminal activity? This isn't a black & white activity... even if it were, the cops still would see it black. Predictable that CSD would be called... and the kids at risk.

2. Why would anyone shit in their own cereal bowl??? Living there is one thing, having kids there is another, but having a domestic argument loud and/or violent enough to have the neighbors call the cops????? That's just stupid.

Hate to say it... these aren't pro's... aren't model citizens for the MMj community... just stupid.

Those kids were likely in trouble before this incident... not saying CSD is going to make things any better for them. The real losers here are the kids.

Secondary is that MMj is even associated with this. The issue is domestic violence & child welfare, not MMj... that just made it triple stupid.

You're right, fuck these parents for following their constitutional right to grow a plant. I say we ban kids from greenhouses and forests too, all that oxygen those plants put off has to be dangerous. Next time I see any kids playing on their front lawn I'm calling the cops, we must keep kids away from plants, period!

someone else pointed this out to me as well... plenty of good people doing good things with plants & with good kids. no doubt about that.

no doubt one shouldn't have an issue w growing this plant. no doubt one should have a right to be secure in one's safety & possessions & right w/in one's own home. no doubt.

no doubt one thing (growing mmj) has anything to do with the other (caring for your kids in a safe environment)

i have serious doubts that these individuals think of their kids, first & foremost.

i have serious doubts that they thought of the kids that day, fighting to the point that cops had to be called in.

like i edited the post... this is domestic abuse/violence & child welfare... nothing to do with MMj at all... except the plants had the misfortune of being raised in that environment... but worse yet for the kids. so yeah, fuk the parents.

I'm sorry BD...

Think we are all upset.

Watching the news this morning... you just have MMj Grow House & Domestic Violence & 3 Children.

That's a fucked up association for MMj.

That's a fucked up situation for the kids.

It's all fucked up.

Whats fucked up is you are associating the two when they have nothing to do with one another. The cops and the DA are simply using anything they can to fuck with growers because they do not agree with MMJ, that should be the focus here, not whether the parents lived like Mother Theresa.

Point well taken.

I can concede this. Jaded by my past, which was a lucky one to have.

I'll leave my posts up, but yes, it does read self righteous. My apologies to those I offended.

No man, differing view points are good for debates and makes for interesting reading. Say what you really think.

well, I dont have kids, and dont plan on having any, however as kid that grew up in grow house, from before I can remember, I dont think there is anything wrong with having kids around MMJ. Shit, if Mopho and I ever do have kids, they will be garden slaves!

However you have to look at why the cops showed up there first, it was because of domestic violence, it wasnt initially because of the pot. So while it is fucked up about the mmj and correlation between that and child abuse, I think seeing the parents fighting is worse for the kids psyche, then a few flowers.

So in a sense SGmeds is correct, these people brought it upon them selves when they stopped acting civil and LEO had to get involved and there was MMj involved, even if it was just growing in their basement.

We all know that whenever anything happens and MMJ is around, our favorite herb gets the blame, no matter how the situation actually went down...

Apparently there was no domestic violence, only "yelling at eachother". Well that happens from time to time. I could see a situation where a grow could endanger a child, i.e. if your electrical isn't up to snuff causing a fire hazard or something of the like. But I think these people will win in the end because MMJ would no longer be considered a "controlled substance" since the right to grow this medicine is spelled out in the const.

Just thought many would want to read this. I pulled it from another site, Skunk Skool, and it sounds like this person is close to the situation:

These two people are what my family call junk. they have had several DV calls on them several calls to dhs and nothing was done...2 of the kids' father wasnt even able to see them. It would have never came out, except for their arguments, which were really abusive. It wasnt booze, just plane stupidity on the Mom's part. The kids are in a great home now, they are in good care with many family and friends...Let the healing begin...

Pretty simple, if they live in a medical state and are legal then they are in their rights, if it's an illegal grow than it's just fucking stupid. Maybe the could have used some of the money they made and rented a small place to grow.

It sucks the kids have parents with some issues, and maybe it's better for the kids to be elsewhere.

The problem I have is that MMJ is being used as an avenue to prosecute the parents, and regardless of how crappy the parenting may have been this could set a new, extremely unfavorable precedent.

If you have kids and are a mmj patient or cg, the ruling on this case could directly affect you.

This isn't new, anti-mmj people have been trying to make mmj grows out to be something akin to meth production... I've seen news articles on the subject in the past weeks. Now, the d-bags might have found a case they can set precedent on.

Unfortunately, it won't look good for pro-mmj people to align themselves with the accused if they have prior criminal history or real child abuse is involved.
