Maximizing yield on a low-yielding strain (dj short 'flo', 1200w veg, 4000w flower)

hey guys, i've been gifted some clones of DJ Short's Flo. they're vegging under 1200w of mh and will be flowered under 4k hps. both veg and flower are vertical, open bulb rooms.

everything i've read about the strain has me believe that it's far from a solid producer. vegging in vert, they've got fantastic undergrowth and are about 8 inches high each. they were grown out to 10" and topped down to about 5" or 5-6 nodes. currently in 1 gallons, they'll be transplanted to 5 gallons about a week before flower. flower will begin at 16-18". they will be bushes. they are very healthy with very strong looking root systems.

my question is this - how can i maximize yield on a low producing plant? does it need to be topped multiple times? at about 3.5 to 4 feet tall finishing under 4k hps, can i expect at least a couple zips per plant (or does "low producing" generally mean "don't get your hopes up"?)

bump for the morning dudes.

i didn't mean to turn this into a "what will i yield" type thread, my main concern is if there are methods that i should be using to increase the yield of an apparently low yieldling strain.

if anybody has any input on successful grows they've had with low yielders, that would be great too. what could you have done better, and how rewarding/disappointing was the whole process for you?

well first off you will need to veg for at least 6 to 8 weeks and go with big pots of course 5- 10 gals if possible top lst super crop and the least amount of stress possible of course and you will help the plants come to there full potential but you will still be limited to the genetics of the plant but a few zips is poosible with most plants not all but most root space enough light which you have covered low stress and proper training techs and you will be golden tweezy good vibes bro good luck although flo is low yeilding strain there are phenos that yeild descent

I have some Flo's going myself now. Wonderful plant, amazing smoke, however, yes a bit of a light yielder. The Flo responds well to being topped, you can even double top. But it stays very short and squat, with fat leaves, almost looks like an indica, although its 80% sativa, it fools you. I don't think there is any need for LST or any tying or bending. Seems to also respond well to crimping or breaking the main stalk a bit. The thing with Flo, even with cool temps and intense light, the buds look thick and huge, but are kind of fluffy. They are not airy or light, like Diesel buds, they grow very tight, the whole top 1/2 of the plant will be a single cola if you let it, but the buds themselves are like cotton candy. With this strain, I wouldn't stress myself (or the plants) by trying everything to maximize the yield. I would instead try everything to maximize trichome formation! I love the stuff, but its not a commercial producer. I've been thinking of chucking some HP pollen at it to see if it will yield more in less time, but still turn purple!

Here is some Flo we took down a while back:

Great thread, I have been wondering the very same thing. I;ll be doing a run under my 600 dedicated to DJ strains. My plans were for a long veg with a FIM, then put them under a portable scrog screen over a 5 gal bucket. I think with the right approach even the most finicky strain can perform well. I've done a bit of research on dj strains I think with these less is more.

I need about 1P per run, anyone think this is doable with DJ under a 600?

You should ask this same question in the "DJ Short and Legends" forum. Lots of experts with much experience growing Flo. I'm sure they'd be happy to help.

Any luck on your run of Flo? I averaged about 2 1/2 oz per plant, and they were also probably 14"-16" put into flower, topped only once.

Scrogging is the best way to get the most out of any plant IMO. This technique allows for even light distribution on all bud sites and for each cola to be almost identical to each other in size. Keep growing!
