Dealing with CanFan noise

Here is the issue I have a can fan sitting directly on top of my carbon scrubber which is in the basement and vented to the homes ducting. Upstairs the you hear a slight humming of the fan/air movement. Is there anything for me to try to quiet this down? Variable speed controller?

You can put a variable speed controller on it, but I'd just build a baffle box around it to deaden any noises. It's worked for my buddies in areas where noise is a concern.

wrap an old sleeping bag around the fan, that has helped me a few different times with fans being louder than can be tolerated .

they also have mufflers you can attach to the fan before your duct work.

Aside from packing some batting (blanket, insulation, whatever) around it you can also use rubber grommets on all the mounting screws. It cuts down the vibrations considerably.

In lieu of grommets or 0-rings you could fashion something yourself out of any higher density but cushy material you have lying around.

Small pieces of old mouse pads are good for that purpose.

other ways to quiet things down:

Wrapping blankets/sleeping bags around the fan as the other poster mentioned works. (the air running through the fan cools it, so don't worry too much about it overheating)

There are threads on constructing mufflers, similar to DIY carbon scrubbers, but just using a box or a plastic trash can w/ a hole cut on each end & a tube made with 1/2 inch wire mesh running through it w/ pillow stuffing filling the trash can (other than in the middle of the wire mesh tube, of course) is quick and easy to build & will help considerably on noise (it will cut down on airflow somewhat, however, make sure you have the CFMs to spare)

using insulated ducting should cut back on some noise, as will a muffler.
i was just at an op that theyr;re trying out one of the can filter mufflers - canfilter 100+12" vortex+muffler....
the difference between muffler on and off was substantial in my opinion.
if your handy maybe try making one...
good luck
