Mastergrow's Crazy Closet Techniques

Welcome fellow closet kings and queens  ..

I am an outdoor grower that has been driven indoors by pests, mold, thieves and helicopters. I still do a couple plants outdoors to provide Christmas gifts, but that's all. Now, I have a 6'x4'x8' bedroom closet (walls covered in Mylar) that is now my main "garden". My goal was to be able to produce 8 oz of bud, 3 times a year, w/ minimal expense and trouble, in a 4'x4' grow area.

I started out w/ a 400w switchable (MH or HPS) light, because I figured halide for grow, and hps for flower would be the way to go. However, I found that the halide put out more heat than I could manage in the summer w/o installing a fan vented to the outside...even w/ central A/C. The halide also only puts out about 60% of the lumens as the hps, so now I am using the hps for both grow and flower. I ordered a Hortilux bulb to provide some additional "blue" light.

I use ProMix w/ added perlite and mostly organic liquid nutes and supplements. I have used Alaska Fish Formula, Morbloom, Superthrive, Earth Juice grow/bloom and catalyst, Pure Blend grow/bloom, Thrive Alive (red label), Liquid Karma, Cal Mag, and Awesome Blossoms at one time or another, in different combinations. I now have a formula (described later in the thread) that IMO, produces optimal growth and buds in a many different strains. I used to fortify the ProMix w/ blood meal and bone meal, but I found I actually had stronger plants, better nute control, and easier flushing using just the liquid nutes.

My last grow consisted of six females of varied lineage, flowered @ about 12 inches. The result was six 2-2.5 footers that yielded a total of 5.8 oz of manicured, cured bud.

In my current grow, I germinated 20 seeds right in the moistened(water w/ a 1/4 tsp per gal of Thrive Alive) ProMix in 3" pots covered w/ plastic wrap, lifting wrap daily (humidity dome is easier). I almost always get 95-100% germ rate...even w/ older seeds, using this technique, and fewer deformed and stunted seedlings than the paper towel method. I transplanted into 1 gal pots @ aprx 15 days, and finally into 3 gal pots when sexed after switch to 12/12. Usually 2-10 days.

I vegged under 18/6 for a total 45 days* (24-30 inches). I now have nine 4-5' bushes, including pot height, @ 30 days of 12/12. 2 Bogglegum, 2 Nirvana Big Bud, 1 Magic Bud, 1 PPP, and 3 Magical Mystery Mix... a leftover seed grow. I had planned on six bushes, but got 9 good ladies after sexing and culling undesirables, and couldn't bring myself to kill any of them. It's really not as crowded as you might think. That being said, 6 plants would be much easier to manage and I doubt I will do 9 again.
* First 2 weeks seedlings were actually grown under 2 flourescent shop-lite fixtures, but that is because one of the Mystery Mix plants from the previous grow went 82 days flowering, so hps was still in use. No more "mystery" strains for me! :chin:

The way I have been able to grow such big plants in such a small area is really pretty simple and somewhat "ghetto", but it does require that you are able to raise the bottom of the reflector about 6 feet from the floor. The key is really using 4 cheap table lamps (no shades), aprx 15 inches tall and 4 of those 45 watt spiral flourescent bulbs that screw into a regular fixture. The bulbs I bought were about $9 each, and put out 2900 lumens each (gauranteed for 8 yrs). Lamps were also about $9, but you could find some cheaper possibly at a thrift store or yard sale. They don't need to be anything special, just pretty short. I bought all my stuff from Wal Mart.

Ok, the diagram below shows both a 9 and 6 plant "over and under" bush grow. The circles are 3 gal pots, and the Xs are the table lamps on the floor. As long as the bulbs are not touching the leaves, they will be ok.

With the 400w HPS overhead, and the table lamps below, the taller plants get adequate light to grow well. Photos later in the thread

Since there really isn't room for much bending, if the plants are at significantly different heights, I raise the shorter ones up by placing them on top of whatever I have handy that is sturdy and raises them to the desired height. You might not need to do this if the strains you are growing are similar in stature, but I like to grow indicas and sativas at the same time. That way, the indicas are usually done 2 wks or more before the sativas...allowing the sat divas to bask in some serious "sun" in their final days. Besides, I like a multitude of "buzzes" and flavors to choose from.

I use a 20" box fan ($10 at walmart) as my only source of air circulation (unless temp and humidity allow me to open the windows a crack), so I cut off the lower branches to expose the bottom 6" or so of the main stem. This helps create an over and under airflow when the fan is placed at the closet doorway exhausting out into the room. I have never had a mold problem indoors.

I have had INSANE growth and flowering in this current grow, and judging by the size of the buds @ 30 days, it could easily yield over a pound of dried bud! I think some of this vigor is due to the nute formula I have settled on after much trial and error, and I will relate that formula in a post later this eve. Please feel free to post any questions or comments here or via PM. Later. MG

Hello again

As promised, these are the nute formulas that have performed best for me. Remember that these are for inert soil grows like ProMix. All measurements are per gallon.

Grow: 1 TBS Earth Juice Grow, 2 tsp Pure Blend Grow, 1.5 tsp Liquid Karma

Flower: 2 TBS Pure Blend Bloom, 2 tsp Liquid Karma, 1.5 tsp Awesome Blossoms

Late Flower: 1 TBS Earth Juice Bloom

1st transplant: Half of grow formula + .5 tsp Thrive Alive Red Label

2nd transplant: Flower formula + .5 tsp Thrive Alive Red Label

I also like to give 'em a shot of Cal Mag at each transplant, as per label instructions ( I ran out, and just ordered more.... can't remember the exact amounts for certain).

First week after sprouting, I give 'em plain distilled water. 2nd week I give 'em half-strength grow formula. Full strength grow formula after 1st transplant until 12/12.

Flower formula from 12/12 til last 4 weeks of flower, and switch to late flower formula for 2 weeks. Flush w/ plain water last 2 weeks.

My next grow will consist of Nirvana's Blue Mystic and Ice, Rez's Bottle Rocket, and Wallyduck's C99 X Grapefruit. I really hope to get a digicam for Christmas this year, so I might be able to document part of THIS grow w/ pics (for a change)!

I hope this thread is of some help to other growers.... I've taken in so much from these forums, and I like to contribute in return. Peace to all!

cool man... you need a digi :D Sounds like youve got it all planed out real nice. How do you like promix? I was putting a lot of thought into going soilless with either promix or coco. Just wondering do you have to adjust the pH with the nutes you use for the promix and if what is the pH on the nutes? Just curious. Sounds good man. Hopefully you can get at least a cheapo digi to show off your bud porn!

Hey Dubmantx  thanks for stopping by!

I really like the ProMix, and I have seen on these forums that many long-time growers and breeders like it too. There is actually more than one ProMix formula, but they all contain mostly peat moss w/ varying amounts of perlite and vermiculite. Most also contain lime to neutralize Ph, and a wetting agent. I almost always add more perlite, for even better drainage.

Ph has not been a problem for me, and I have read that Earth Juice products can significantly lower Ph if you don't let the solution "sit" for a day or two, but that has NOT been my experience. ProMix has a neutral Ph of 7 to start, and by the time I harvest, it is about 6.7-6.8... a good Ph for bio grows IMO. I don't adjust Ph at all....in fact, my last 4 grows have been so consistant Ph wise, that I don't even check it anymore.

Good luck on your grows man!

Lol no worries on no pics. Thanks for the info on the coco and EarthJuice stuff. That makes it a lot more encouraging for me to start cause i hate dealing with fluctuating pH which is the primary reason I grow in soil. Also one of the gurus that gives me tips recommends the EJ products anyways. Cause their cheap and you can get away with just using grow and bloom if you want to... Of course adding other supplements is always good. Anyways thanks for the info and keep us updated.

I think BOG uses EJ and Pure Blend...and he's guru material in my book! :D

Off topic but thinking of BOG reminded me...

I will have some Bogglegum F2s popping in another week or 2. Strangely, out of 12 Bogglegum seeds, I got 9 males and 3 females....luck of the draw. However, 1 of the males was so early, thick-stalked, and tight noded, that I took him outside....he turned out to be VERY floriferous as well. One of the 3 ladies also turned out to be pleasantly curious...with extremely dark green leaves, the sweet aroma of jasmine, and showing trichs after only 10 days of 12/12 :yoinks:! I will grow some out in February, and hopefully be able to show some pics by then. Should be some interesting "children" :yummy: .

You can't ask for much more that 2 outstanding parents from 12 seeds, so no regrets here. :canabis: Besides, I got 8 females out of 10 seeds w/ Nirvana's Big Bud....it all works out in the end. :ying:

As far as updates, I will at least post the trimmed, dry weight total from the grow, but I really just started this thread to share what I consider to be a very high yielding growing method using a 4x4x8 growing area, 580 watts, and minimal $...so there won't be much else to update (unless it catches fire or something  ...God forbid!). I know that I have not earned any credibility in even this particular growing community...just another of many unknown growers here at the IC forums :bat: , but I can honestly say that these methods have worked very well for me. I would truly love to hear from and compare results with anyone else that might try them. Peace and safety to all.

Hi GreatLakes THC...nice to see you in here!

Sorry, no cam... no pics, but I can try to give a better "mental" picture.

The table lamps I got from Wal Mart have a 4" round base, from bottom to top of fixture is 15", and bulb adds another 6" aprx. I sit 'em on top of smaller pots if I need to raise them. I have my plants in 3 gallon containers, sitting on a 4'x4' sheet of masonite in a 6x4x8 closet. I just position the lamps on the floor around the center plant and between the outer plants so that the bottom halves of the plants are evenly lit. 400watt HPS overhead, Mylar on back and side walls...that's really about it. Although I do believe my nute formulas have contributed to the system's success as well. :D

Well, after many months, I finally have a digicam. My Stepdaughter and her husband bought me a Sony S60 for my Bday! :woohoo:

I'm still learning to use it (trying), so don't expect any great shots for awhile :pointlaug I wanted to get a shot of my grow before harvest. One Bogglegum has already been harvested, so there are only eight plants left. Please forgive the shot quality...better ones in the future, I promise!

Crazy closet grow:

Closet at day 49.You can see the 4 lights on the floor, and there is a 400w hps overhead. In case you're interested, the 3 plants in front (L to R) are Nirvana Big Bud, Bogglegum seed mother, and Magical Mystery Mix. It's hard to tell from the pic angle, but the plant in the back left corner has the 12" main cola bent forward as it was 5.5 ft tall... a Nirvana PPP. More pics to come! MG

Hi sirharrynuggz  thanks for stopping by...

Yeah, I'm an old f--ker, and this new-fangled tech stuff is like magic to me :pointlaug That pic is actually the first pic I took (intentionally-lol)...even before reading manual. I guess it could have turned out worse. I can see already that I will need a tripod.

Unfortunately this camera's minimum focus is about 20 inches, so I won't be able to get any of those really close macros I have seen in the forums/contests.

This is a side bud on my Bogglegum seed mother:

These are the 3 "Magical Mystery Mix" from the closet. "All out for the Magical Mystery Tour, step right this way!"

Roll out.....

Thanks GreatLakes THC

I wish I knew what strains they were! I know they're from Sagarmatha, but which ones? I'm sure the "mystery" will be revealed eventually. :chin:

They all have different aromas.... one has a ripe pineapple smell, another is more like bubblegum, and the 3rd one is hard to describe... a very sweet licorice/citrus/pine smell....sort of. Someone also said it smells like suntan lotion. :yoinks: You can't really tell from the pic, but they are all loaded w/ trichs.

BTW, here's a pic of one of the 4 lights I have on the floor...

It is 21" tall, including the bulb. The cost of 4 of these w/ bulbs was about $68, and IMHO, they make a noticeable increase in bud density and weight than using the 400w hps alone. Even most of the tiny popcorn buds are dense and firm.

I am photographing the plants as I move them from the closet to the dark-room, 2 days before harvest.

These are pics of a "Magic Bud" plant from Paradise Seeds @ 52 days:

More pics to come. Peace and safety to all.

Here's the way I set up the lights during veg. I don't use the lights on the floor until I transplant into 1 gal pots. 400w Hortilux overhead.

Hi Rodriguez ... ... and thanks.

The "crazy" part is the amount of prime bud you can get w/ 580 watts in a 4'x4' closet grow. This past grow w/ 9 plants has a final yield of about 325g (apprx 11.5 oz) of manicured bud. Two of the plants were pollenated, and would have yielded a little more otherwise, but I am satisfied.

Here's a sample of that grow... Paradise Seeds "Magic Bud".
