1st grow in tent...

i have a DR150 Secret Jardin Darkroom. the dims are approx. 5'x5'x7'. for my exhaust i am going to run a Vortex 747CFM inline fan. here's my problem. it was suggested to me at my local hydro store, that i use the Active Air 40"x16"(8" duct) charcoal filter. this thing is a beast!:yoinks: there is no way i'm going to hang it inside the tent (i could, but man would it take up precious space, not to mention it weighs a ton).
anybody out there have any opinions on this? i know they make a smaller (shorter...30"x16") unit that would be a bit more manageable.
i'll be vegging w/ 4', 8 bulb T5 and flowering w/ a 1000W HPS with an air-cooled hood.
thanks

Yea, the whole ventilation setup sounds like WAAAAAYYYY overkill. I am using a 4X8X7 darkroom and my ventilation setup is a 31X10 charcoal filter and a 6" 435cfm inline fan. With that I totally change out the air in the tent every 55 seconds which I consider to be a bit of over kill, but with yours you will be completly changing out the air every 5 seconds. Might be sucking the leaves off of the plants at that rate, LOL!

Here is my setup>

And what I consider to be a very important part is this rubber adapter to go between the fan and the filter. It dampens the vibration from the fan and makes for a quieter setup. You can buy it at lowes in the plumbing section. It is made for joining clay drainage pipe. They do have it for 8" too.

I would rethink your ventilation setup though. With that much airflow you will at least need to get a speed controller for the fan so that you can slow it down a bunch. At the rate you would be moving air you wouldn't be giving enough air contact time in you charcoal filter for it to absorb any odors.

If you want to keep things tidy, you can push through the filter, just put it on the top of the tent. With my DR80 I go reflector -> ducting -> fan -> ducting -> filter.

You must have a very small filter if it sits on top of the tent. Doesn't it cave the top in from sitting up there?

I would like to see a picture of that too.

Sorry I do not have any pics of the ducting and filter. I was using one of those shitty little Elf/Goblin filters made for tents. They worked well, but at the end of flowering they could not contain the funk that smelled of skunk.

I usually rested the filter vertically where the poles were, as to not mess up the actual tent material. The run of ducting from the fan to the filter was maybe 2.5 feet long and just a big U shape with duct collars on each end.
