Clone Cut Sterilization??

Greetings,

I've read people discard each blade after using to cut a single clone. I've also read to dip the blade in Ethanol. Discarding a blade after one use seems absurd. (I'm a bit more conservative)
The closest/easiest thing to get here is "Everclear" which is 95% Alcohol (ethanol) (190Proof).

I suppose I can get a bottle of that and dip my blade in it and then I guess dip it in water to wash the alcohol off (If needed??)

Unless someone else has a better sterilization technique??

i steralize mine in boiling water works ok for me..
ive used the same 1 for the last 2yrs.

What if you where taking 50 plus clones. Boiling water would work, but wouldn't a dipping solution be more practical??

I like to sterilize the blade before cutting on each plant, not each cut. Rubbing alcohol is great for this.

Just realized my stoned typing might have been confusing. I sterilize the blade before I cut each individual plant. If I get a few dozen cuttings I still will have only sterilized the blade once. When I move on to another plant I will then sterilize it again to prevent spreading disease to the moms and the cuts.

nope not denatured alcohol, isopropyl rubbing alcohol that you can find in every drug store and first aid kit. It evaporates fast and is effective and sterilization. Oh and it costs less than $1 a bottle.

i usually cut myself so i save the alcohol to sterilize my wounds.does it really matter ?enter technogeek with side by side baseline comparison of :1 sterilized after each cut,2after each plant,3never,4and lastly rusty shank coverd in garlic oil used on any rippers i catch.

I was just considering what chemical (because many will sterilize) would be safest/beneficial for the cutting.

i swab with 91%iso before making cuttings. but i dont see any real advantage to doing it between each cut or even between moms...but we all do it different. i have no troubles, even going from MJ to tomatoes back to MJ etc. even a surgeaon doesnt sterilize the scalpel between cuts. :smoke:

I never sterilize. I use the dirty, rusted, resin coated #11 X-acto I clean my bowl and stem with.

Think blade sterility and sharpness of cut is only an issue if you are working with infected material to start with.

Unless you sterilize your hands as well between plants it seems a bit excessive.

Any plants i now aquire are isolated and cuts taken from fresh growth to be safe.
Plant i was given last year had mites , root aphid and PM in one lethal package , a mate got the same gift and his fanatical use of fresh blades did not save him.

Get the temp right in a bubbler with healthy stock and its routine 100% in a few days and moulds cannot compete.

Useing the same filthy dulled swan morton scalpel blade since 2000 ish with good results !

Always steriliza your blade before starting. sterilize everything..

As for sterilizing the Cuttings themselves.. (the conversation here gets confusing)
i dont sterilize th cuttings. i just start with a clean environment, and let the cuts sit in a small dish of good water and a bit of h202 (hydrogen peroxide) and the smallest drop of superthrive i can manage.
i get about a 98 % success rate, depending on strains/ species.

sterile isnt as important as fuckin sharp
not sharp=crushed stem
sharp=clean cut, can uptake water ok

isopropanol or hydrogen peroxide are the cheapest things for this though
ethanol works too but you have to pay taxes on driking booze
but denatured shit works too, but its easier imo to run to corner store and buy 16oz iso for 1$
