What kind of Damage can One 40 degree night cause?

Hi My last batch of babies as well as foot talls, almost to the plant!, took GAS right after i got the bright idea to turn off my lights (only heat source) for ONE NIGHT so i could dose them all with C02 (dry ice underneath my table). after that the leaves on many levels turned yellow, died, are still turning yellow, and or red, like a MO deficiancy, and got nicrosis spots. i havent changed anything or done anything to cause any of this since they WERE all KICKIN HOLY ASS GREAT!!, So i don't feel listing any grow parameters would matter. everything is the same. except i have added 1/2 dose of 20-20-20 peters, then some nitro meal and it seems to have done NOTHING over the last three weeks.

the one question is "Will one night of 40 degree temp wipe out a whole herd or not, with yellowing and necrosis, and red leaves all on one plant" if not, what kind of damage WOULD it cause?

second question is, will these yellow bastards ever bounce back or are they best burned up? the leaves that have turned yellowish, have just gotten kind of hard, in fact, it seems like all the leaves on some of the plants have gotten somewhat harder/stiffer to touch. i COULD add pictures, but there are VERY MANY of leaves like mine, with black spots, necrosis, and yellowing. i HAVE THEM ALL GOING ON, W/O NUTES!!!! (and again, the same soil/water i had when they were all flawless).

one night...probably not that big of a deal. I've been plagued with many nights low 50s and high 40s...plants have shown some stress signs but are not in too much trouble, looking pretty good overall. Keep it simple and don't freak out too much. I'm sure someone on here can come along with some more specific advice. Good luck to ya and welcome aboard the weeeeeeeed train. toot toot...

I'm no meteorologist but things like wind speed and dew point can determine whether frost occurs. I'm not sure frost is possible at 40f but I've seen it at 38f. The ph fluctuation DarthBowl spoke of sounds even scarier than mild frost. I hope everything works out great, probably will.

Oh yea, maybe some plastic over the plant would help. Plastic keeps my tomatoes going longer than the season allows otherwise. It's pretty easy to fashion a tent over the plant with a long stake or two.

thank you Darth, and Sound. disco, i should have mentioined i am growing inside, in an attic. the temp outsite was low 30's. so i figure 40 something inside. i have been trimming the crap out of the dying leaves. the tops seem to be coming back but yeah, it's almost at the point of throwing them out and starting over will outperform them coming back from the dead. i have pics. i will post them in my gallary of PAIN. when i can i will come back and link up or either say i have them in the gallary.

i have also all my babies in what's called a 4" pot but actually is like 3x3 x 3" deep. i have totally flushed the living dogcrap out of them, as well as filled a 5 gallon bucket with water and submerged the 1 footers in their 8 inch pots. it hasn't done anything other than about half look like they MAY pull out of it some day and the others looking like nothing has happened. new growth is occuring in the leaves that were smaller, ie they are getting bigger, but they are staying the same color. the leaves that had red, like a MO deficiency, have just gotten HARD and died. i have given them Orchid bloom food, because a; it had nitro in it and b; it had .005 of Molybdenum instead of the usual .0005. it didn't help, as i said.

any other indoor guys have problems with cold temp wasting your garden? maybe and most likey Greenhouse guys?

Also, just an FYI. Plants don't use CO2 during dark hours. Only run CO2 during lights on. You did that for nothing. Sorry.

I might add that you won't need co2 until flowering either. Plus, It would be pointless to do a one time shot. It would need to be a constant thing for it to matter.

Its possible that your dry ice burned em.

my table is up off the floor some 18 inches. the ice was on the floor. two of my nice 16 inchers look to be biting the dust. i thought plants used c02 at night. oh well, i picked my name cause i invent new ways to torture my plants.

darth spoke some true words and i went through the same thing not too long. flush and get temps back to normal. your descriptions of sypmtoms were exactly what i had.

okay gdawg. i haven't put that advice aside.

may i ask alittle about your grow sitch-iation? @ what temp you think they went down to and all? are yours indoors or out?

i am keeping them. might as well cause i got no newbs to take their place yet. god i hate this! just when i thought i had it down! i bought 20 baby containers but they are an inch and a half longer. i will transplant them all into these with the bottom filled with organic compost/perlite they did so well in till now

the ones that looked the worst are still getting even worse or dying. did yours take three weeks to kick-off? they look like there is no hope. some of the babies are starting to look better but not green leaves yet. others are just looking like crap too.

edit: i have done my transplanting into a 4" pot with new organic compost and perlite and i actually am seeing alittle green coming back. while i was transplanting i tickled the roots. i hadda lotta plants with a flat layer of perlite all the way across thru the roots. no matter. i gave about a half a pinch of bone meal and a half a pinch of blood meal over the roots like salt. then soaked them down after they were in their new homes.

another form of slow, prolonged torture? perhaps, only the plants themselves will know. will i hear their tiny screams in the night tonight?
