This a post off the Advanced Nutrents Fourm I found it to have some good basic information on the use of nurtients /

,the amount of nutes/supplements can seem confusing, and so make the usage of them seem quite complex. Like anything, growing cannabis sucessfully, has a learning curve. How steep,or shallow this curve is,is soley dependant on how agressivley you approach it.
If you are a relativley new grower, than don't use such a complex formula. You would not make the assumption that just because you bought the best track shoes on the market, that the first time you set foot on a track, you will beat the 4 minute mile.Hell no...buy a good basic shoe, and just keep running untill you get better and faster. Then go get the fancy air cushion mumbo jumbo magic shoes, and the grease for your hair to give you an aerodynamic head...whatever,you know enough about running now,to try and tweak the system.
Look at a cannabis plant the same way.On a botanical level,it is a very complex entity, with numerous and complicated processes, all varying not only at different times of the day,but throughout its life cycle as well.
But as a grower,it is a much simpler thing.
A mature cannabis female is only three basic parts...Roots...shoots...and fruits...Thats it...aint no more.
So address the plant as such,a simple three part entity.then make sure you meet at least the basic needs for all three.
You must provide a "base" nutrient.A simple progressive ratio of N,P and K.
"N" is the shoots,"P" is the fruits and "K" is the roots. And as fert companys, such as ouirs, have already worked out those ratios, nice and simple.
Supplements:A plant will grow through it's entire cycle, with nothing but the above correct ratios of N.P.and K.In nature(outdoor grow) thats fine.It takes a long time, but nature adds supplements by incredible control of enviromental factors. And that is pretty complex stuff,so lets not go there.Lets stay with our simple three part plant.
Roots:we want to get roots growing faster and better,as root mass equals fruit mass in the end.So your first choice in supplements addresses the roots. You want better health and more aggressive growth.Adding bacterial or fungal elements(or both) will accomplish this. The methods that these mychorisal elements employ is again complex, but the results are simple...bigger healthier roots. And of course the ratio Of NPK is working here as well.
Shoots:first, what you did to the roots,is going to improve your shoots(leaves and stems) by making food more available. Your base nute NPK ratios are in use here as a control as well.So the issue to address in flower is health and vigor. This is where a good B-vitamin such as B-52 is so important.it will help keep these vital leaf structures and food carrying stems healthy, and stress free.We stop using it,after second week of flower,as the "shoots" portion of your plants, shift function from feeding themselves,to feeding the flowers(fruits).Of course in veg,the "shoots" portion is much more vital, and so should be adressed more carefully.
Fruits: This is why grow the damn things to start with.So lets get them as big and sticky-icky as we can.Again what you did for the roots, will ensure that you get lots of food to the fruits. And a nice vigorous shoot structure ensures lots of energy for big fruit growth. And of course that ever changing NPK ratio,is doing it's job, increasing in amounts as the size of your flowers increase, and then decreasing as they ripen off.So to help outdo what the normal NPK would accomplish,we are going to add a supplement, that will tweak those ratios to the specific needs of the flower, while it is growing larger.Thats what Big-Bud does.In conjunction with base nutes,it fine tunes the more specific wants of growing fruits. As the fruits(buds) mature, they stop getting bigger, and start producing more resins and oils in a protective measure against longer cooler nights, and shorter days.and this is a good thing,as this gives them density and weight. And that density and weight,as a grower,IS our bottom line.Overdrive does a similar function to big bud...but targeting a different part of the fruit. And without, the aid of any base nute.It targets the specific needs of the resin and oil production of the fruit.Your plant is no longer "growing".Just as you top out at a final height and girth,so does your plant. You no longer require the same high caloric uptake,as your not putting on mass. And your plants don't require high NPK,as neither are they.
Then it's just a matter of flushing out anything your plant hasen't used, and it's cycle is finished.
