I'm kinda going by date rather than height, but at day 15 (the last day before flowering starts) I expect the average height to be about 6"-8". One may think that's short, but it's actually quite normal for SOG cultivation.

It's extremely loud at full speed, but the solid state fan speed controller substantially reduced the noise, but only after adding some cushioning under the fan. You see, solid state controllers create some electrical noise that actually make the fan vibrate louder unless you absorb those vibrations. With the speed controller and some cushioning, the noise from the cab is quite tolerable when in the same room, and virtually unnoticeable when in an adjacent room.

yeah, fans like that are fairly loud. i'd be interested to get some details of how you cushioned it. mine is in the loft above my bedroom and i hear some vibrations in parts of the room. ive bought some sound proofing rubber tape to fit between the cab and the floor of the loft but not had time to fit it yet- and it's gonna be hard to retro fit. cushioning just the fan may be simpler

If you can some how hang the fan with bungee cords, then that would be best by any measure; then all you'd hear is the woosssshh sound of the fan, which could be speed-controlled if necessary (even most of the electrical hum caused by the controller will be absorbed).

If you can't hang it, the next best thing to do would be to mount the fan on top of some squishy foam or sponge. Don't mount it too tightly or else the foam will flatten and vibrations will transfer to the cabinet (or wall). The type of foam can really make a difference too: I used foam from an old seat cushion; worked like a charm.

Pontiac, Looking good my friend. My Nycd x c99 seedling took off this weekend while I was away. it is about three inches tall with its seven point leaves coming out already. I will snap some photos for you a little later. Still trying to catch up from being gone this weekend. I can't wait to go into my flower room tonight at lights on!

Hey i just join cause of you threads pontiac......I had been looking for a SIMPLE SMALL AND ALL IN ONE DIY for a while now and stumbled onto this one so im also trying my hand in it just a couple of questions seeing as i dont wanna burn my house down........your 3 cfls are wired using a plain old extension chord.....and the small cpu fan in the veg/cloning chamber is it an exhaust or intake fan?

Anyway, about your inquiry... I wired those light sockets in that way due to space restrictions. I did my best to conform to electrical code as much as possible: I wired the porcelain light sockets to a 14 AWG extension cord (attached to the housing with NM cable clamps) and mounted them to grounded 4" metal octagon housings.

Now you don't have to do it like I did because there are much simpler methods that are just as safe; for example:

You can get a power strip or surge protector:

and a few plug-in outlet socket adapters:

Then simply plug in a socket adapter to every other outlet on the power strip and... Voila! Let there be light! :jump:

The power strip should have mounting holes on the back as well; should be a piece of cake to setup! The end result should look like this:

To answer your last question... The 32 CFM fan in the top-left corner of the mother sector is an exhaust fan. Since heat rises, :abduct:

exhaust fans should be placed near the top, while passive/forced intakes should be placed much lower. I chose not to link the mother sector in series with the main 170 CFM exhaust fan because of energy efficiency reasons. There will be times when I don't need to grow bud, but wish to keep my strains alive; using the 170 CFM exhaust fan for that case would just be a waste of energy... not to mention unnecessarily noisy.

Also you seem to be very concerned with safety... Do your self a favor and get a GFCI outlet. Basically these things will detect a short to ground and trip a lot quicker than circuit breakers/fuses should that situation arise. You may already have one installed, but if not, there are external "plug-in" ones you can get: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3150602

I like the way that cab looks, everything necessary is well laid out. Wasn't the cheapest set-up but it looks aesthetically pleasing and you've covered all the bases.

Well we're on the third day of Vegetative (10th if you count the 7 days of transplant) and in just 5 days (since the previous update), the average height doubled, which means they've fully recovered. Even the little stunted one (4th from bottom left) is doing well... She may not be as big as her identical sisters, but I've grown to like her the most; she's a real trooper.

Due to their good health, I'm no longer against raising the TDS to over 500ppm. In fact, the TDS is now at 648ppm and the plants show no signs of stress or nute burns... I may even raise it over 900ppm before the flowering phase begins (6 days away).

I'm also pleased to say that the rising pH problem has been alleviated. :jump:

Now even after 48 hours from adjustment, the pH stays under 6, which is good news... VERY good news!

However, the 2 res changes and clearex session needed to fix the problem make me want to reconsider from ever using rockwool blocks again. :chin:

The initial overhead involved was just too annoying and obviously stressful to my plants. I guess I better jump on the coco bandwagon right after I finish my rockwool stock.

Despite the resolved pH problem, there's currently a new problem... Salt deposits (build-up)... I think the deposits are now even visible in the above pic. :yoinks:

Clearex doesn't seem strong enough to clean up the build-up... at least not at the recommended concentration. Does anyone have some advice on salt build-ups? :1help:

Damn... I knew there was a catch with Ebb & Flow. :wallbash:

SirSmokalot - Thanks for stopping by :smile: yup they recovered all right, and they're growing REALLY quickly too. They don't seem one bit affected by the previous pH problems or the current salt deposits issue. :nono:

I must admit, Mazar Kush is one of the most hardiest strains I've worked with yet. :yes:

No complaints from me so far.
