Cannabis salve, ointment? Alcohol extracts?

I was wondering if any medical patients have tried making a cannabis salve, lotion, ointment, etc. My mom has terrible arthritis in her neck, and is cool with smoking, but doesn't herself. I think she would benefit greatly from some type of a salve or ointment that she could apply topically to her neck when the arthritis flares. I've mentioned how cannabis can help alleviate some of her pain and discomfort from the arthritis and related problems (she also knows I grow), and thought out loud I might be able to make something like a ointment with cannabis in it. She promptly produced a book with different recipes for ointments and salves, so I know she's interested.

Now, I was thinking something oil-based would be the best, but I was unsure of exactly how I should go about it. I was thinking either some butane honey oil added to an oil based salve, or maybe making an alcohol extraction and use the alcohol as a topical painkiller.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. My mom is a wonderful example of a human being and I hate to see her suffer so much. I'll be harvesting soon, and will be able to use keef, buds, whatever it takes. Thanks! :woohoo:

(I also should mention that my mom won't smoke it, though I may be able to get her to eat it, but the salve is the one thing I've mentioned that she seemed really receptive to.)

WR's Cannabalm (anti-cancer) Ocean of Lotion

All who have tried this on burns and other skin irritations will attest to it's effectiveness. The first part is a version I created using Emu oil,it is an aromatic light oil(like suntan oil) the second portion describes how to turn the oil or any Cannabis oil (recomended; jojoba, hemp, olive, almond, etc) or fat(ghee, emu, lard) into a smooth lotion which can be scented and ingredients such as Vit E can be added(as well as other good skin herbs such as aloe):
First the Emu prep;

Here ya go the Emu oil is important due to it's ability to penetrate the skin fully .And yes I have a special batch of emu goo mixed with tiger balm it tis da Bomb (pun intended)

well I took 1L emu oil and infused 140g resinous leaf and small bud in a double
boiler with 1 pt of anhydrous isopropanol for 1 hr and filtered. then added 2cups
STRONG tincture of cannabis,1cup olive oil,1oz patchouli oil(smells good)and 1
tblspoon of lecithin disolved in 1/2 cup tincture of calendula .yeild 1.5l greenish
lotion type oil with a pleasent yet green aroma.
First trial 2 tablespoons rubbed vigorously over pulled shoulder and collar bone
region(pectoral ,neck ,shoulder, deltoid, rt side only)
First notice a mild waming in region, also stiffness seems less in my hands in the
first 15 minutes after 30 minutes feel a very comfortable "glow", almost opioid,
speading from the region of application.whole region feels loose and
comfortable, especially the region where the dr's split my collarbones for heart
surgery, this area has never completly recovered from the operation and gives me a
lot of pain when I do stenuous activity(wood splitting, overhead work). So far at 45
mins post application this area seems to be much releived. Also this lotion is
pleasent to the skin and seems to penetrate very well as my skin does not feel
"greasy" at all.I have several samples prepared to give to several joint pain
sufferers to try.I will post their responses as they comment, but so far this is the
best topical delivery I've come up with to date and will persue this avenue of harm
reduction for arthritic users.I think there are other substances that could speed
absorbsion. Also the slightly green aroma could be worked with but all in all I call the
Emu oil delivery an astounding success when compared with the many other fats
and oils I've used in the past.(first posted 9/6/2001)

Next i will outline how to take a basic Cannabis oil or fat and turn into a smooth creamy lotion;

Ingredients

24.0 oz distilled H2O

4.0oz strong cannabis oil or fat

1.2oz emusifying wax

1.2oz cosmetic grade stearic acid

1.0oz liquid vegetable glycerin

.3oz germaben ( a natural preservative necesarry to prevent spoilage/rancidity)

.3oz essential oil of your preference(remember the smell your already working with and try to compliment it)

For a cooling sunburn lotion menthol crystals can be added in place of/with the essential oils

Instructions;

Heat all ingredients in a double boiler until melted then whisk until creamy.Add the last two ingredients and whisk thoroughly.

Pour whil warm into bottles.

Makes aproximately 32oz.

All ingredients except the cannabis (and the emu oil and ghee) can be found at

I can't help but feel a sense of pride as science validates so many of my own deductions about the true medicinal value of this amazing herb. My wifes G-ma used it on her burn several summers ago and now I am suplying a group of snowbirds in Ariz.with what they call"Veva's green burn magic".She takes a gallon of it south each winter now. LOL I don't think she tells them just what makes it work so well!

You're cooking now WR. I've sent you an E-mail to see if we can generate a variety of creams for peripheral neuropathy, arthritis, injury/muscle pain, sunburn, and possibly treatment of acne and wounds. Yea!

Yours,
Dr. Jay

ps: you're terrific WR. Can you see us going to prison for felony hand cream (Canny Blue).

One was Texas Medicine and the other was Railroad Gin. And like a fool I mixed them and strangled up my mind

"They've been trying to put the Roscoe on me for years."

Jack, good to see ya back man. I told my mom about the alcohol extract, and she told me my grandma had mentioned something just like it! I'll be giving this a shot here shortly, I'll let you know how it works. Thanks alot man...

rsteeb, thanks for the search on that! It sounds alot more complicated than Jack's method, but sounds very promising.. I'm going to do some research on the different ingredients, and see how feasible it would be. I mentioned this to my mom also and she said that the emu oil is some good stuff, so I will be attempting this also. I will post any results from what I do. Thanks again!

And if anyone else has anything else to add, by all means, please do.

i have tried the cannoahol rub that the co-co in Tulare has. It gave me pain relief. Was 5 bucks for a bottle of it.

GREAT!!! Thank so very much for all your replies! I've been busy as heck lately with harvest, now I have a little spare time to concentrate on this. Maybe even post a thread on it??

Dankz, what does the lotion smell like? I'm trying to think of some kind of scent to add to it, I don't want my mom to be unwilling to use it because of the smell. Maybe some lavender? And how strong is it?

Edi77, what type of pain do you use it for, if I may ask? My mom has arthritis, and the pain in the neck also contributes to migraines. Do you think it's strong enough, or could it be stronger? What color is it, light, dark green maybe? I was thinking of using Jack's recipe above, and evaporating off some of the rubbing alcohol to make it potent. But, as my mom isn't a cannabis smoker, I don't want to make it *too* strong. I was thinking of making some regular stuff, and maybe some 5x or 10x. What do you think? Anyone else with an opinion on this please share it.

Once again, much love for all the responses.

Bump from the past.

Has anyone tried making this lately? I want to stop using the petroleum-jelly they sell at the club.

rsteeb, thanks for the recipe. If it's Dr. Jay approved, it's great. Seems like there are some other ingredients that would work well with this recipe, maybe a little comfrey and some other herbs.

My family makes oil by buying up the buds left over after harvest. We take and put 20-30lb in a 55 gal drum with some cana a sugar cane alcohol. We let it 4-6 months then drain and evap. While I am up here I use an ISO wash for my oil.But the cost is ridiculous,as it takes about 3/4 oz of good bud for one treatment. Those other oils and salves I have seen at the clubs will not help much with serious pain. I have broken my back and neck at separate times.I know what arthritis in the neck feels like. If your are really, really careful you can use DMSO for when the pain is severe. But this chemical will allow everything to pass thru the skin, good along with the bad. Suerte JK

There's a company from Oregon called MerriHempsters, they make a Hot Hemp Rub & another called Cold Hemp Rub. I've used these for muscle pain & they work well. It comes in stick form, like deoderant. It has a cannabis oil in a beeswax base plus other herbs. They also make a stick-salve for cuts, scrapes & irritations that is helpful.
And thanks for the recipes from everyone!
