mini split not cooling like it use to??

ok,
got my 32,500btu mr slim online last dec.
by april something was wrong?
I took a few weeks break in the room
when it went back online with all 6000w fired up
no matter what the set temp was, room temps were in the hi 90s
big trouble.

this is what happened....
i did some repotting for the next bloom run in the room
and wet the promix/FFOF to keeep the dust down,
but not enuff i guess.
when i fired up the ac for the next round and potted more plants i noticed it didn't seem to cool as much
it went downhill quickly form that point and no matter the setting i was pushing hi 80s.
I checked the filters, dust had clogged the filters, but it didn't seem like that much.
BUT
it was enuff to affect the system trying to cool 6KW of heat,
the filters looked *kinda dirty* to me so i cleaned em and BAM, it cooled perfectly
those filters have to be kept---> CLEAN! even the users manual says to clean every 2wks
efficiency goes strait downhill when they start getting dirty *especially* with multi-1000w barebulb gro situation.

end of story, happy ending yeah yeah yeah.....
or so I thought

ok, here's the rest of this story.
i added another 24Kbtu mini for back up insurance.
but noticed my the fuggin mitsu mini was not cooling again 3-4wks later.
checked the filters but they were clean, every 2wks they get vac'd...? :shucks:
crap!! what NOW?
checking everything, I should have been AOK,
but it was cooling less than when the filters were clogged.
so now I'm thinking i have to call HVAC
and check r410 level etc etc.while my 24,000btu mini is trying to cover the job of a 32,500btu

about to call hvac when i noticed something looking like ash blowing out the unit, not much,
hardly noticable,
i had been seeing it on the floor occasionally and wondered what it was and where it came from :chin:

checking inside the head unit I found this coating the inline blower assembly
picture.php

.
picture.php

mold was choking 80% of the airflow on the inline blowers fan blades!
reading further, like i should have the manual sez filters getting clogged can create a mold situation,
and also shutting down the unit
and not getting all the water out of the water collection tray below the fan will also contribute.s
o when i went off line in april with water in the tray
and with the dirty filter it looks like mold got a foothold and started growing on the fan blades,
then i started a new bloom run with my Rh 65-70% for the 1st 3whks of bloom then lower it as buds bulk up.
those 3 wks of Hi Rh were perfect for the mold and it took off and clogged up the fan blades.
now i have to bomb the room with trinity fungicide and spray eagle 20 on the plants i put into bloom a few days ago.

so anyways going online and found the service manual to see what it takes to remove the inline fan,
christ you have to pull everything apart to get it out.
called tech support before reading the service manual and while waiting I read all this crap i had to do to get the blower out.
he came on said screw the service manual
he could walk me thru it and have it out in 5 min with a phillips screwdriver
he was true to his word :D

keep your filters clean!! and if you have to service the unit yourself call tech support.
they turned a whole day job into a few hours.

I hope this helps another IC brother with their mini split down the road in the future

That's very convenient that you are able to access the blower assembly. Was it easy? Did you require any specialized tools such as torx?

Think im gona go with a traditional AC system if I ever upgrade to a sealed grow. That really sucks you have to clean the filters so often. Thanks for the tips on mini splits though.

I recommend hosing off the exterior unit once in awhile too. Mine got clogged w sticky dust and declined. I got a senville minisplit to replace it and LOVE that thing. It keeps four lightts at 75 easily.

well depends how you go about it.
to do it by the service manual its a mere 300+ fuggin step process
:moon:
talking to tech support it he said,
screw going by the what the service manual sez,
i can walk ya thru it in 5min if ya gots a a phillips screwdriver handy.
he's da man in my book
:dance013:

I'd never make my decision on which ac to get based on the filters cleaning schedule.
really it's not that big a deal to clean em,
it takes a few minutes to pull em out, vac em and back in.
there's pro's and cons to a std AC and a mini split.
opt for what's best for the situation
and doesn't matter which one you choose, they both have filters that need attention :smoke:

yup, sage advive oscar, I also put the plastic housing cover on the clean list today :D

Oh man, that thing is nasty.
oh yeah, and thinking about the crap it spewed into the room is another thing.
I'm gonna use trinity bomb in the room to deal with any *residuals*
from all the mold...
lol... it kinda reminded me of blue cheese

Good heads up Gnome

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience

hope this will help peeps in the future to deal with mold issues.

IC is a great place for knowledge and Ive taken my fair share from this site so returning the favor when i can is par for the course :good:

5% h2o2 all over everything will do a good job of killing everything.
And by the way, that is really disgusting!!

Thanks for the report. Here is my tip to you. If your Breeze ever starts dripping water from the head unit the tray in it is probably clogged. Grab the condensate tube and blow in it until you get an air bubble up through the head unit. Be prepared for some nasty shit to come out and have a bucket ready so it doesn't all go in your rez.

Wow good to know will be checking my filters ASAP. Glad you was able to save that unit. How was your 24k breeze keeping up with your 6 lights on? If yours could handle 6k barebulbs sure mines could handle 6k vented.

Yup, them fans are a pain in the ass to access and clean. Myself, I use a small stiff pain brush and patience. I remove all the guards and leave them off; that way I can get my whole hand up the and actually grab the fan an hold it still while i brush away.
However, I've dealt with dirty fans before and it should not affect your cooling capacity THAT bad. If cleaning the fan doesn't then i would suspect freon leak. Unfortunately the only way to measure the freon is to weigh it into an empty cylinder...
If it is a leak you'll have to pull out all the r410, fix the leak and then weigh in the proper amount. If you need any help let me know, these last 3 weeks I installed 3 Mitsu's and moved 3...

ewwwwww....oh man, i get a visual image of blowing on that nasty pipe and the clog busts loose before you get your pie hole out of the way...haha
:nono:
i have an air comp if it plugs but i doubt it'll get to that point.
down here in the south It's routine to run a gal of bleach solution down the line to keep crap from building up a few times yearly.

i had just changed over to the CMH 860w so saved 840w there and the mitsu limped along just enough to make things barely work

hopefully now others won't get to the point of my fans nastyness

hola ass,
some of the spaces between the blades were
blocked solid with mold.
air was very cold, but i estimate i had 80% blockage in the fan blades...
i fired it back up and it runs like brand new
:woohoo:
I was so glad i didn't have to get hvac in to work it out.

i started to clean it with a small brush but it was a so slow going and there was so much that was inside the tube style blower I had to pull it
as always your offer is always appreciated my florida brother :tiphat:

i will be doing a rigorous maintenance on both units from now on.
cleaning the filters 2Xs a month, I'll be spraying a H2o2 solution or lysol on the blower and vanes.
this situation has potential serious health hazards for me
and the plants,
hopefully this type of mold isn't a risk for my plants,
it spewed who knos what out in the room.
I'll be doing a thorough clean/disinfection in the room

hopefully this post gets read by many and prevents things like this getting to the point it did with me

Oh ok, didn't realize it was that blocked. Good. "Cause weighing out/in r410 is freakin nerve wracking and tedious. Let this thread serve as a psa for all mini split users, CLEAN THE INDOOR FANS ON A REGULAR!

maybe i can use a spray bottle with detergent and H202 to clean and neutralize the baddies.

I'm thinking using a hepa air scrubber to keep the dust down in the room,

How did you do this? I have got to the filter before but that's it. Never have had anything to clean on the filter though.

you can see the inline blower blades by looking under the up-n-down vanes,
then you can see it between the sidexside vanes
you have to turn off the unit 1st to stop the fan

if you have mold you have to access te inline blower assmebly by removing the outer plastic housing covering everything.
I see 7 screws holding it on,
but I'll have to get the service manual at the friedrich website to make sure there's not other considerations.
looks like that'll be my saturday morning job tomorrow

Gnome, thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Now that you have it back together, have you noticed any new audible sounds coming from the unit that was not present before??

I have heard similar stories from people I know but had never seen it mentioned on the boards. Interesting to see it documented. When friends tell you stuff, you just kind of have to always take it with a grain of salt, but fuck thats a ton of mold.
