Germinating some old seeds.

So I have some old seeds that im trying to germinate. I have them in some distilled water in a jar. I've made a cpl of attempts to pop them but with no sucses so im trying again.

If they pop the'll go into coco and hopefully find some nice keepers These are of a cross i made God Bud/ Black Spice.

I have some original Black Spice that I want to sprout but I want to be sure I dont mess them up so starting with the cross first.

I tried 3 BS a while back and 2 did nothing and 1 just popped through the shell and stopped. I planted it but it never grew.

This time I scraped the outer shell off and scraped the shell edge. hopefully they will pop open easily. Been wondering if I should put them in dirt first until they r sexed. Fuck IDK we'll see what happens.

And if anyone has some great dif technique please share your experience.

So far all but 3 have sunk to the bottom. What does it mean if they float? Bad?

I got some old freebies (Kali Mist) from the Boo with the order and I decided to grow them since my friends don't grow. I was too clumsy to scrape them so I soaked in a weak Kelp (lots of growth enzymes) and water solution for 24 hrs. I germed them in paper towel and the 3 that sank in the Kelp were the first ones to pop in 24 hours. The other 2 took a day longer. I planted in soiless mix and it took 2 days for the 3 to come up, one more day for one, and I am still waiting on one. So yes old seeds do grow and the ones that sank germed quicker.

I checked them again and all have sunk to the bottom. I think ill leave em in there till they pop if they even do.

Two cracked the shell so I put them in a root plug. I ph ed the water to 6.3 and added superthrive and pre rinsed the plug with that. stuckem in a cup with a baggie over them. The other ones are still soaking.i think ill put them in paper towels and see if any more crack open.

You might consider scuffing your seeds , it would do them a world of good.It should be easy to find , with a search.

With some of the more pesky seeds I've sprouted I've taken a razor blade or sandpaper and shaved or sanded down the shell a little bit near the part the sprout usually pops out of the seed.

Yeah I already scuffed them to begin with. and the edge where they usually crack. Might have to try some of the kelp or seaweed next batch I pop. I have a lot of seeds to choose from.

so i took the rest out of the jar and cracked them with a pair o needle nose. just enough pressure to hear them pop. put them in paper towels.. we'll see if that helps any.

the industrial method of popping old beans is to treat them with gibberellic acid. only run you a few bucks on ebay.

i've bought some for other species, waiting until the growing season to try it, but nurseries and universities use it.

A few drops of Kelp liquor and scuffing are good advice.

Also a few drops of H2O2 to half cup of water, as per the old overgrow info and elsewhere for general H2O2 use with our plants watering regimes, which is adding %9 H2O2 at 30ml to the gallon of solution, a few drops to half cup equivalent is about the same scaled down.

Oxygenation of germination water with H2O2 helps the initial embryo swell as too helps the husk cells weaken at the join arond the seed where the Radicle pushes out and aids splitting for the primary Radicle to emerge.

I always add Maxicrop Kelp with chelated Iron and H2O2 when germinating, if old seeds, it's very beneficial, moreso than with newer seeds that have a lot of vigour which require little or no help to sprout.

Literally a few drops of each, to about half cup/200ml water.
