freezing seeds

Hey all, I have some Bog seeds I got from seedsdirect just before they sold out and I would like to preserve these. I know freezing is the way to go but what is the best way to go about this? I was thinking of putting the seeds in a airtight canning jar and then in the freezer? how long will they last? is it ok to freeze all my seeds untill the future?

I wouldn't freez if you only have a few. When you freeze seeds you make some of them not viable. The ones that do survive the freezing will last much longer that way, but you can maintain the viability of most of them for almost as long in the fridge. The best way to preseve just a pack or two is put the paper package that it came with in a ziplock bag. Then put a couple more over top and then place them in a tubberware container in the far back of the fridge. If the seeds have a couple pieces of dry rice or even dry paper or tissue with them it will help. Make sure a box of baking soda is in the fridge also to limit humidity. Placing them at the back of the fridge is the best as the temperature is most consistant back there. When placed in the front or in the door shelf when people open to get milk and such the temperature changes and makes condensation. Hope this helps and good luck!

I have frozen some seeds for over 12 years and had a nearly 100% viability. I would highly recommend freezing them as the environment is also much more stable than your reefer that is opened quite frequently.

This is simply not true. I freeze all my seeds and I allways have excellent germ rates. Some I have hept about 3 years in the freezer with 100% germ rates. The only pack of seeds I ever had an issue germing was Dutch Passion Durban Poison, (6/10) and those seeds were not frozen. Never have I had an issue with frozen seeds.

JLP performed an interesting experiment a while ago. He put some seeds in the fridge, some at room temperature and some were actually frozen inside ice cubes. All from the same batch The ice cube seeds germed 100%. The best ratio from the experiment. Anyway it was a small sample, but interesting nonetheless.

I store my seeds in an airtight container with moisture absorbant crystals. This is THE BEST way to store seeds - period.

I keep mine in the freezer and have had excellent germ rates. Freezing them just keeps them dormant until theyre ready to germinate. Same as the outdoors. Ive also had good results with the fridge so either one should work.
Also let them sit out a couple days before germing. Ive always done this and think it helps.

A dark airtight container placed in the refridgerator is the best way to keep seeds viable for at least three years

Seeds should be kept in a cool dark place - although many use freezers, fridges are actually preferable as optimum temperature for storage is just above freezing. If you do choose to freeze them be aware that like many things you should only do this once.

If a fridge is not available a dark, dry, cool corner will suffice.

I have always frozen them though.. :chin:

The general rule of thumb seems to be that if it's short term storage(3-5 years),then using the fridge is probably fine, over 5 years and you should probably freeze them.
I've seen 100% germ from both.I've had some people ask if the seeds need to be frozen in order to complete the natural lifecycle of the seed.Cannabis is native to many places that freeze every year and also some regions that never freeze at all.
I don't know if the freezing process can kill weak seeds but if it does then it may actually serve as a culling feature. If a seed doesn't have enough genetic oomff to make it through a freeze then maybe they are inferior.

yeah that makes sense, survival of the fittest. From what I remember from the og growfaq it said the best way is freezing. Airtight container with dehydrating crystals in the freezer does sound like the best way. In fact I believe they come strait from gyspies freezer in big kilo packs of seeds simply "tossed" in the freezer.
