Questions about DEs and proper layout

Does anyone have experience with double ended fixtures, specifically the Gavita 1000 or better yet their 600/750 watt version (that I do not believe is available yet in the US)? I think my height, roughly 7', is too low to run the 1000, but I have heard that you can tune them down to 600 watt. Which prompts the question, would it be worth it to buy the 600 watt version, if I can just tune the larger one down? Is my 7' limitation enough to allow me to use the 1000 watt double ended, or even the 600 watt version? I heard you need 36" of clearance for the 1000s, which would make their penetration useless with the size of light + pots + plants. The 600 watt version, as I have been led to believe can be 18" - 24" from the light, which should just give me enough room. I do believe the reflectors may have been designed to be hung higher, and may have a smaller than desired footprint when suspended from only 7'. Would I switch the reflector, and if so, to which? These lights are not typically aircooled, as I have heard that can affect the efficiency.
With all respect, I appreciate any helpful input, or clearing up about what I have asked and stated. I am in the process of dialing in, and have just begun. Please feel free to criticize (respectfully) any aspect of my grow that you have experience with and could help me to improve.

My setup now is two old six hundred watt hps, I can tailor my room to the size I need, and am thinking of doing three 600 watt hps (hopefully double ended eventually). I currently have six plants one month in flower (in one gal) and six plants one week in flower (in five gal). The smaller pots were a bit of an experiment, and I will be using mostly 12"x12" white squre pots that I believe are aprox 4.5gal. I use roots organic bloom, roots trinity, then mess up all the organic with bloombastic to finish. I give some veg fert the first month or so in flower, slowly weaning them off. The rooms are a little too warm at the moment, 82F, but the air gets moved around decently. The mix I use is Sunshine Mix 4, which I believe is just promix with a little coco and some biotics. I am growing basic kush variations, that are pretty nice, I will try to get a few pictures up..

This is definitely a work in progress. I started before everything was perfect to get things going, and work off the rust. The first test grow was a nice little success for me, but I am sure most of you would have laughed :) sokay, I would too if it werent mine.

I eventually hope to close the room, use co2 and ac.. but those would be new to me.

I know, I know, so many questions, and I am sure I am leaving many out, no need to answer them all. If you have experience, and are feeling helpful, I would appreciate it in any area.

I just purchased a Gavita 1000e DE, but will be using 8'4" ceilings(sorry rest of the world for the measurements) I currently use 2 x 600W(aircooled) with 7' ceiling, and feel that the 1000e DE will be way too much for my current room.(although I may try after my burn in) With the proper growing style anything is possible.... I also looked into the 6/750e DE flex version, but wanted the intensity of the 1000e DE. I will try to let everyone know what I think of these lights.

@ 1000 watts I can say you need at least 36" from the top of the canopy to keep from light bleaching and eventually burning your plant.

I had 12 lights (DE bulbs with agrotech magnum hoods) in a room in a simple 4x3 rectangular configuration and all the plants that were in the center of 3 lights were getting light bleached leading me to dim the center lights to 750/600 watts until late flowering.

i asked this question before

1000w run best at 1000w and a brand new 1000w needs to run at 1000w for a couple days before being dialed down to 600

a 600w at 600w is ideal (750w too) in the situation where the 1000w is too much

some 600w are not double ended...

A 600 watt rated bulb will typically always (more like ALWAYS) run more efficiently than a 1000 watt turned down to 600. You tend to lose color and light spectrum as you turn down the wattage.

You would HAVE to grow plants off the floor and not let them get above ~3 feet if you wanted to run multiple lights @ 1000 watts with double ended bulbs. If you think you'll have a higher ceiling in the near future then the 1000 would be a better investment. If you're pretty sure you'll be stuck with that 7' ceiling I'd go with the 600. To be honest I think the 2 600W DE's would yield very similar to 2 1000W standard HPS

So after speaking with Gavita affiliate/distributors, I think I may be able to get away with running the Gavita in 7' ceilings with a wide hood, to increase surface area, decrease penetration/intensity. The idea will be that I can still dial the 1000 down if it is too hot, and that it runs very efficiently even tuned down. I obviously won't be growing 6' plants, and so trading intensity for surface area would be ideal. I could go with the air cooled hood, which does not directly cool the lamp, nor require glass, but I eventually want to add co2, and so may just opt with a big hood and AC when it becomes necessary. Would anyone care to weigh in, as I appreciate feedback? Anyone want to make a case for 600/750?

Respectfully,

Kiefer
