MH for veg DE lamps as of now are only sodiums and sodiums lack some key ingredients for a Veg cycle like UVB and a focused low nanometer range to promote better photosynthesis.

Also HPS is having a hard time selling in my area due to the full spectrum lamps flooding the market that offer much more than a HPS DE lamp.

1st, Ive never ran the DE HPS,
but have ran the super horti eyes for a few years and can compare to that.
I now run a sylvania 1000w metal arc MH 4000K in veg-n-bloom
why,
it performs in veg
it performs as well as my super HPS horti eye in bloom
I average 12" stretch in bloom
running mag ballasts i save money not needing the hps option
it runs cooler than hps, i save $ on the AC bill

I also save a pile of $$ because my 1000w MH sylvania only costs $21an
d this is what I get using it

Exactly what gnome said HPS DE has a great market campaign for growers wanting to completely change their system at a large cost (and your stuck with that style of system) , but save the money go with a general or full spectrum halide lamp and save the coin, clean your reflector and maintain those spectrum you'll get great results with-out breaking the bank.

well not sure i said that but yeah,
dbl ended bulbs are taking their share of the market
at a significant upgrade cost.
I might would be interested if theey offered a MH in my preffered Kelvin range-4000.

personally what i see the biggest compition to hps is CMH bulbs,
they run at 4000K as my Mh bulbs, hmmmm... coincidence?
I think 4000K is the sweet spot for cannabis.
but the CMHs run over such a broad range and next to the sun's spectrum its very close to it though out the plants 400-700 growing range.
compared to hps, which looks like a couple upside down icicles
Im currently running 1 cdm860w CMH bulb.
and it i *is* nice.
seriously contemplating a change to them very soon.
