Western Flower Thrip + coco + drench rates

I would like to start by saying that the above were the search terms I tried entering . I got a return saying that no results were available.

I am growing in coco. I have a couple of bubbas and a chemdog that are not large and still in veg. I have sprayed them with a general insect killer (rosemary oil based contact killer) and it knock them back, but not down although it did burn the hell out of the poor plants. They have pretty much recovered. I now have the damage starting to show on the new foliage.

I have a bottle of the bayer 3 in one, insect, disease, mitecide. Is it safe to use it as a drench ? At what rate ? Feeling like I have beat the hell out of the poor plants and not changed anything for the better here.

Gry,

Spinosad is what you want to use. Spray, not drench. See the western thrips sticky thread just above. Best of luck. Hope this helps. :)

I read the thread first. Seemed to work real well when it was introduced. More recent posting seem to indicate that a resistance has developed in some areas and that a mixture is the way to go with several opinions as to what is appropriate to mix with. I have some ordered, but it is looking like I may have to add something to it.

"Because of continual reliance on spinosad for control or suppression of western flower thrips, certain populations
have demonstrated diminished sensitivity (or resistance)
to spinosad. It has been reported that western flower
thrips populations in the United States are resistant to
spinosad as well as populations in Australia."

Yeah, the African Violet folks say you have to get rid of all soil, pots, utensils, tools, and all cuts no matter how rare or valuable. Western Flower Thrips are tough.

Just start new.

Ah poo, have the spinosad ordered, have been using insecticidal soap on them every three days until I can get a spinosad tank mix going .

Spinosad worked great for my spider mite outbreak a couple years back. I used the liqued for the foliar application and drenched the root zone with the powder mixed into the feed. Took about a month to get them all. After they were gone I would drench once a week with the powder(much cheaper) and started supplimenting with Silicate. I got lazy after not seing them for months and stopped using it all together. Its been two years and no bugs.

Yeah thrips are a pain, I battled with 'em a couple of summers ago, spent a small fortune on sprays but finally won using Amblyseius biological control. They come in little packs you hang on the plants and the little critters come out and eat the thrips.

I can only vouch for Spinosad being effective based on my experience with thrips just recently. I sprayed everywhere down and sprayed my way out of the grow area and threw everything in the wash. In between I had a proper clean and spray down of everywhere and I haven't seen one since.

Real happy to hear of positive outcomes. Waiting, on my stuff to arrive. Have a nice cut of bubba I do not want to have to let go.

^YES!! I'd be looking for the little critters with my little Radio Shack pocket microscope and the little suckers will look right at me with their claw fang things like they wanted to bite me. creepy is right.

Not so sure how much I will be dealing with Home depot in the future. Both the spinosad and and safers soap concentrate were a special order. When I went to my local indoor hydro type grow store they had the spinosad product on the shelf and were willing to order the stuff for me and their deliver date was 4 days sooner than home depot was even though I had ordered from home depot 5 days earlier.
It did cost just a bit more, but I feel a whole lot better doing business with a privately owned concern than I do with a place that is as big as a small state but does not want to stock safers soap - while they sell the bayer product at many times the price. Tired of the bs corporate schemes over every little thing any more.

There's a Thrip Sticky. All you need to do is to spray and drench with Spinosad. Spray kills adults, drench kills in soil stages. Also do an area spray. Usually only takes the one treatment [both], but I advise a follow up in a week. KISS-Keep it simple stoner. Good luck. -granger

Ugh. I just noticed what I think is a tiny bit of thrip damage, and this is the last thing I want to do. UGH!

Thrips are way too easy to get completely rid of to take the "start over" advice. They are one of the easiest to fight and beat. -granger

In my experience with them, I agree with Granger.
You've got to be thorough and spray your way into and out of the grow area, spray the walls, strip down when you're finished and get a shower etc. But I treated my whole area with Spinosad and I haven't seen a single thrip since.

A few plants in a cabinet. The plants I have work well for me, I sure would like to keep them. I will apply real carefully to the cabinet and the area around it also.

Amazing how little of the stuff it takes. I used 25 ml and had more than enough to coat every surface of each plant in the cabinet top and bottom and to pour over the coco as a drench. I sprayed the cabinet and and all the stuff in it real carefully.
It has only been 12 hours but the plants sure do look good at this point, not at all in shock or anything. The sticky traps are empty.

In reading about them, they lay eggs in the leaf structure, hatch in 3 or 4 days. A respraying of everything on day 4 feels like the right to do.
The plants still look ok, not at all like the stuff pushed them back or anything of that nature.
