Dave Brubeck died today, a day shy of his 92nd birthday.

Dave was one of the pioneers of Jazz stylings, and imo the leader in experimenting with altered time signature pieces such as Take 5 (5/4) and Blue Rondo a la Turk (9/8), amongst many others. Dave was the type of person to not just follow along with what others had done, and instead pushed the envelope and took the road not travelled, musically speaking.

Time out is on my short list of all time great albums.

Thanks for all the years of great tunes Dave, what a collection you have left us with. You'll be missed.

My mom put me on to Brubeck, among many others, at a young age. Taught me all about cool jazz and bebop! Was lucky to have been brought up with great musical exposure.

Bummer, I am also a fan of Brubeck (I think most people are whether they know it or not). He was a Stockton, CA boy, I believe. I was shocked when I was told that because Stockton is a real cesspool these days and has been a for a while.

Saddened to hear this news about a truly great and revolutionary artist of the highest caliber. They just had a tribute to him on PBS news hour and it brought back many memories. He was a true giant in music history, one of the greatest ever. It's a shame that young people today are not exposed to this music.
RIP Dave Brubeck.
You will truly be missed, but your music will live eternally.

I saw Brubeck at the Kennedy Center back in 76. His son was on drums. He and Stan Getz were my favorite jazz guys. Well, throw Miles Davis in there too. Godspeed old man.

He was? I had no idea! I've been listening to him a lot lately, as my sister and father have been collaborating on digitizing old home movies, and she likes to put them to music. The first and best that she's released is circa 1965, and Take Five makes the best soundtrack for stuff like this (along with some old Bebel Gilberto, et alia).

May he rest in peace, and though we are now bereft, it's gonna get some beautiful in heaven.

Someone shared a 1964 version the Quartet played in Belgium, lots of improvisation on top of improvisation, just incredibly well done. Unfortunately I can no longer share it due to a copyright claim. I would share it with you folks here so we could all enjoy actually watching him play, but cannot. I hope the claim is sorted out quickly.

Dave Brubeck.

The 1962 recording at Carnegie Hall to this day I find new tones and changes, lovely how the audience plays a role.

Also enjoyed the story of him chatting with Miles Davis at a hotel bar once by chance.

Good to know he played to the end, a true master.

Take 5 is a true Jazz gem...his work spans many stylings none of which he was a follower of...but on the front line in helping push Jazz into new areas.
he is regarded to me easily as one of the greats along side
MILES/MONK/MINGUS/ROLAND KIRK/SUN RA etc.
