"When we run up against trouble and find ourselves facing adversity, we may think we've reached our limit, but actually the more trying the circumstances the closer we actually are to making a breakthrough. The darker the night, the nearer the dawn. Victory in life is decided by that last concentrated burst of energy filled with resolve to win."

Scegy!

Scegy!

"As first one person, then two persons, then a thousand, ten thousand, a hundred thousand, and then all the people throughout the country come to chant the daimoku, before you know it, their blessings will accrue to you. Those blessings will be like the drops of dew that gather to form the great ocean, or the specks of dust that pile up to become Mount Sumeru."

This is an example of what I was talking about.

Deepest respect,

Thomas

Please read more of this thread before blindly posting useless mantras and suggesting their usage. We have over 700+ pages of precedent proving the invalid nature of your suggestions. Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is strictly regarding Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!

I strongly encourage you to recite the Chanting Growers Mantra. I actually spent 30 minutes tonight chanting with my lovely lady Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! It felt awesome and I feel amazing! Tonight I got some news from a friend I haven't heard from that recently went to the hospital with a concussion from a sporting accident and found out after the MRI and CAT scans he also has a brain tumor. This young fellow does not regularly chant, but knows about the practice from coming over to our home in the past to hang-out. Of course I chant in front of all my friends and the chanting stuck with him. Tonight he also told me that in the movie Revenge of The Nerds Part 2 the nerds actually start chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!

Just like I encouraged my friend to give the practice of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! an honest try I suggest the same to you Shaman. The truth is that those chants you speak of have no power or validity as per my study of Buddhism as it relates to Nichiren Daishonin's life and instructions for his lay-believers. I know people that have overcome all sorts of obstacles and have created amazing causes by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! and this is the sole theme of this thread. To encourage and support those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!

Recently I have been studying Nichiren Daishonin's Second Volume of his Recorded Writings via an English Translation and I must admonish your post and ask you to kindly reconsider and amend your post accordingly. I cannot do this via pm since you just joined this thread but please realize the grave slander associated with your suggestion, which was brought about by sloth from not reading even five (5) pages prior to your suggestion. Refuting slander is just as important as chanting to me, and I hope that nobody loses focus of the importance of protecting and upholding the truest and most correct teaching we embrace on the Chanting Growers Thread.

To all my friends:

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!

Kind regards,
MyohoDisco

The present age has developed exactly as the Buddha predicted it would, and
Nichiren may be the person of wisdom who the Buddha described. Though some
people wish to help me, either their determination is weak, or, though firmly
resolved, they are unable to act on their intentions. Thus, you are one of the
very few whose actions match their will. You surpass others in your resolve, and
it is because of your devoted support that I have been able to survive.

The important thing is to hold firm to your beliefs without being influenced or
swayed by what others do or say. Those who live this way are strong and free of
regret. What matters most is how you lead your life -- not what those around you
are doing.

"When the bodhisattva Never Disparaging makes his bow of obeisance to the four kinds of believers, the Buddha nature inherent in the four kinds of believers of overbearing arrogance is bowing in obeisance to the bodhisattva Never Disparaging. It is like the situation when one faces a mirror and makes a bow of obeisance: the image in the mirror likewise makes a bow of obeisance to oneself."

Glad you are getting better T, Nam Myoho Renge Kyo~~!

Today I am in heavy chanting mode for this site. Too much disruptive behaviour on the part of new comers...with a bit of effort we can turn this around.

Does anyone here chant with a mala? I am just wondering about them...

Peacefully...

Make every possible effort for the sake of your next life. What is most
important is that, by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo alone, you can attain
Buddhahood. It will no doubt depend on the strength of your faith. To have faith
is the basis of Buddhism.

True joy is to be found in working for kosen-rufu, in practicing and taking
action for the happiness of oneself and others. The greatest joy in life is to
be found in SGI activities. Our activities for kosen-rufu become memories that
shine ever more brilliantly in our lives as time goes by.

Glad you're doing better T!

Glad you're doing better T!

I just finished a super difficult homework, which I was stumped on for three hours! The homework didn't stop me because I started chanting to pass it and I did! I'm taking 5 classes and working 10-12 hours a day, so you can imagine I have no time for anything wasteful. I was really chanting much at the beginning of the semester and felt overwhelmed very quickly, as you can read in my posts during that time. But as I kept moving daimoku in front of my Gohonzon up on my priority list, everything has been muccccccccch more manageable and enjoyable. Still not toking and I'm dreaming so much that I can't stand it, I'm going to start some seeds very soon so that I could have this issue covered for the entire spring semester, but I'm still struggling without my meds.

Like I said, chanting in front of my Gohonzon is awesome! I'm chanting more with my lady and she is feeling superb too. I've been doing as many good deeds as possible lately, since I always busy with other folk and have some nice Nam-myoho-renge-kyo business cards to spread whenever someone is even slightly interested. I think I may do another really good shakubuku soon and I still haven't met my goal for 40 in one year, but that doesn't mean I'm quitting anytime soon! As my education continues, so will my practice and my effectiveness at going back to Gohonzon will also improve.

I keep making causes to cherish and honor my Gohonzon as often as possible and that is why I know the fortune in my life begins in my Sancuatary (home), where I chant my daimoku (call-out my Buddhahood), to my Gohonzon (Nichiren Daishonin). I also really give alot of thanks to Ted Osaki, Tony Matsuoka, The BabbaBUD, PasstheDoobie, and so many others who have nurtured me as a person who recently began the practice in 2006. I also never forget our friends Big Bear, Jolene, My grandfathers, Ted Osaki, Tony Matsuoka, everyone that is not with us who has passed on the wisdom that can only be attained by faith since Nichiren Daishonin. Whenever and however I want, I chant for world peace and the happiness of all living beings!

Aren't we all so fortunate to have our Gohonzon(s)?! I know my Butsudan is the part of my home with the least amount of dust...

Anyway, great going Forest! I hope Desi and Fallen come back soon. Sceg-man hope all is well out there, it is so cold now over here buddy and I hope you are doing well! Leviathan, have you posted anything new on Youtube lately? I thought it was remarkable that you posted some videos on Youtube in the past and must have done some great shakubuku as a result! Hey Socal how's everything over yonder? Good I hope! Chris is by mala you mean prayer beads... I sure do! I don't rub 'em as much as I used to, and I don't really need the Gongyo book at any tempo so using the beads for me is more so when I'm chanting for more than a half hour or at a meeting. The beads keep my intensity a little better sometimes, for the longer tosos the bead rubbing can keep you focused and awake.

Does everyone use a gongyo book and beads? Let me know if you do... I'm interested!

Be good,
MyohoDisco

P.S.- Like the roar of the happier and grateful to be a faithful person I've fundamentally become , Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! Let's keep polishing those mirrors BABY!

I always use the book for the reading of the prayers, but I don't use the gongyo book to recite the sutra, unless I am leading a group of people. And then when I do, I will only lead using the big gongyo book so that my poor old eyes can see the darn thing. When you grow in the habit of doing daily gongyo without using the book for recitation, rather than just relaxing and letting it flow, you can sometimes get lost and not follow where you are on a page with your eye--in relation to what's coming out of your mouth--and freak out a little bit. This causes a hesitation and can break the rhythm of your gongo and everyone else's if you're leading, so I always try and use a book with large print for my own sake.

As far as beads--always, everyday, I feel naked without them. I have several pair of sandlewoods that have all been restrung at least once. It seems that rubbing them is a correlation to what I am chanting about and why. For all those Dogma Dogs out there, let me say I rub the shit out of mine when the mood serves me, and I sometimes chant for hours at a time. I get as much actual proof in my life from my faith and practice as ANYONE that I know, and how I rub my beads doesn't have a fucking thing to do with anything.

Just my opinion,

T

I no longer use the Gongyo book as I have both the sutra and prayers memorized. Actually, the prayers I say during Gongyo has a little variation to exactly what is in the book.

As far as the beads I am like T in that it is something I have used for so long that it feels so differently when I don't have them. It does help in my concentration which is important when chanting to the Gohonzon.

Do not these interpretations make clear that, among all the teachings of the
Buddha's lifetime, the Lotus Sutra is first, and that, among the teachings of
the Lotus Sutra, that of women attaining Buddhahood is first? For this reason,
though the women of Japan may be condemned in all sutras other than the Lotus as
incapable of attaining Buddhahood, as long as the Lotus guarantees their
enlightenment, what reason have they to be downcast?
