How this list came about-

"If the truth won't do, then something is wrong!"

Those were the furious words of my grandfather to my Mother. I had walked in from joyfully stuffing my face with red raspberries in the garden, straight into "war zone"! My gentle grandfather in a fury, his hand raised! Mom was just beginning to shrink back away from him. They saw me and quickly sent me away. But it was too late, the scene and the words were seared into my 5-year-old brain. That was over 55 years ago, but I still remember it clearly. My grandfather was a minister, one very short step away from God in my 5 year old mind. It was one of those life changing moments. It is still rare for me to tell a lie. I never found out what my Mother's lie was.

As I child, I suffered a traumatic head injury. Another child tried to murder me with a hammer. I was left with frequent migraines. At 19, like many rebellious teens, I tried cannabis. It took about a year for me to make the connection between using cannabis and the absence of my normally frequent migraines. I have used cannabis ever since.

I am an avid reader. While perusing an old book on herbal medicine, I read how the little old ladies of Mexico made and used a cannabis/tequila rub on their arthritic hands. Then I met Joey, an epileptic musician. He told me another interesting fact- when he had pot he could cut his medication in half! On a camping trip years later, I smelled an unmistakable odor. Following my nose, I was totally shocked to find a grandmotherly lady in her 70s puffing away on a delicate oriental pipe. "Parkinson's. And the pot's way cheaper than the pills!" Her nephew kept her well supplied, she said. We had a nice chat about various medical uses of cannabis.

Epilepsy, Parkinson's, arthritis, and my migraines! What else was it good for? Yet every news article on cannabis that I saw, claimed one new horror after another. Men grew breasts and were impotent. Women became sterile or miscarried. It made you crazy and murderous. Made you lazy and do nothing. It caused cancer and heart attacks...What I had learned on my own and from others and what I was being told in the press were so different!

What was the truth? I began researching. I printed the first studies up and kept them in a notebook, just as a personal reference. The notebook quickly filled. I started a Word file of the URLs and on July 30 2007, I posted it. It continues to grow.

Here's some of what I have found. All I've done is copy the URLs, then put them all in some semblance order for everyone to use as a reference. Please feel free to share this list with anyone who could benefit from it.

Thank you so much Storm Crow for posting all of these links! I have been looking all over for such information condensed into one space.

Hey Storm Crow thank you for your story and for your research. We really appreciate it and it does my heart some good to see someone care so much about others...... Look out for a PM from me....

Thank you Storm!
Ya know, I feel for all the naive people who have to take harmful, man made chemicals instead of this kind plant, and still feel cannabis is more harmful.

Hi Bruja and everyone!

Hi Bruja and everyone!

"I have been looking all over for such information condensed into one space."

That is EXACTLY why I created my list. You and every med patient need a list like this. I have gotten a tiny bit of flack (not here) for posting mostly just abstracts, but for most folks, that is enough. Those who are truly "into" the science end, can look up the whole article. They're big enough to do that on their own! For them, I'm just "pointing the way".

I want to get all of you to join in my "conspiracy" to educate the world about medical cannabis! When you see a new article about a medical study that shows the benefits of cannabis, figure out where in the list it would fit and then post the abstract or article! Every now and then, I'll go through and add them to my master list, which I plan to repost on July 30 2009, at the latest. Together we can gather such an overwhelming amount of evidence that there can be no way than any sane person can deny cannabis' medical benefits!

I'm going to do the first one in the next post to show what I'd like.

Marijuana takes on colon cancer

* 16:45 01 August 2008
* NewScientist.com news service
* Aria Pearson

The chemicals in marijuana could put the brakes on colon cancer, according to new research. That doesn't mean smoking a joint will help, though, as the chemicals only form part of the process.

Raymond DuBois and colleagues at the University of Texas in Houston discovered that a key receptor for cannabinoids, which are found in marijuana, is turned off in most types of human colon cancer.

Without this receptor, a protein called survivin, which stops cells from dying, increases unchecked and causes tumour growth.

To better understand the role that the receptor, called CB1, plays in cancer progression, the researchers manipulated its expression in mice that had been genetically engineered to spontaneously develop colon tumours.

"When we knocked out the receptor, the number of tumors went up dramatically," says DuBois. Alternatively, when mice with normal CB1 receptors were treated with a cannabinoid compound, their tumours shrank.
Dual attack

The findings suggest a two-step treatment plan for colon cancer, as well as for other cancers that might be linked to this receptor.

First, turn the CB1 receptor back on, and then activate it with drugs currently in development that mimic marijuana. But how to turn it on?

The researchers found that in human colon cancer cells, the gene that makes the receptor is blocked by a process called methylation, in which a small chemical group is added to the DNA.

Treating the cells with decitibine – a demethylating drug already approved for use in humans – removed the chemical group and the gene began making the receptor. Drugs that mimic marijuana might then activate the receptor, although DuBois did not test this.

Journal reference: Cancer Research (vol 68, p 6468)

One small decision as to how it should be classified, and 2 quick cut-and-pastes! That's it and you get to become part of my "conspiracy" to educate the world!

SJ- I totally concur! I just sent the link out to about 30 different activists/groups. It would be a real nice belated birthday present if everyone would send it out to folks they know, or think could benefit from this info. Email a couple of pages worth and the URL- won't even cost you a stamp! (don't forget to do the hyperlink thing!)

It would just thrill me to see this popping up everywhere! Everywhere people getting letters or emails with the URL and some examples of the studies! Politicians, doctors, clergy, lawyers, CEOs where you work.... hard copies "magically appear" in college lounges, laundromats, bus stations,... small, discrete paper "book marks" with the URL somehow get tucked away in books on cannabis, cancer, MS and Alzheimer's at the library... refer to it and/or use it in your sigs on other sites, especially non-cannabis sites! Bet you can come up with even better ideas! spread it around!

And thank you for doing the bump/redirect on my old list! I appreciate that! I remembered to change my sig, but totally spaced on the old post! Thank you!

Education is the road to legalization!

I'm lucky, most indicas and indica doms work. Sativas less so. I have a darling plant I call "Survivor". I found 3 seeds in the bottom of my seed can. NO idea what they were- I had bag seeds of several types- all good, F1s, F2s and a few named strains. Grew them out- 2 males and "Survivor", but she's sweet, stinky and sticky! She's mostly indica with fat leaves. Dang I'd love to try her out doors! Indoors, under CFLS, she's almost all bud!

Have fun with my post!- Granny
