How much money should I have before moving to california?

I think pretty much everyone from California is going to tell you to stay away. That has been my experience here as well. But I can't blame them at all, because if asked about my old "home" state, I would tell people to stay away also. I would say a TON more than stay away, actually, so I understand that. Must be a grass is greener kind of thing.

However, I'm a "real" patient (as the gov't wants to define it even in the strictest of states) that isn't a professional grower and would like to go somewhere and get 5 different strains from the professionals to see which one helps my condition the most. There are real advantages to being a real patient that I really want to take advantage of (not that I care why anyone uses or likes cannabis). Especially if I fry a run of my own. So they are going to have to put up with me.

If you want to go, they'll have to put up with you too. And they'll get over it. Don't just head west without a plan. Come up with one, then come up with 2 back ups, then come up with a worst case scenario, and then you'll have good idea what you can do. Being unsure isn't a big deal, because your determination can fix that.

theres not much work, rent is expensive and CA is incredibly overpopulated.

honestly if i had 12k and no family, i would move to wyoming or montana,,,
where i own more bubblers than the local PD has officers,,, and the cost
of living is very low....

personally i would rather live in the middle of nowhere growing weed ,,,
than stuck in a city working at some shit hole like wall mart.

my best advice? travel to where you would want to live before you up and move.
learn the area. learn the yearly weather patterns.

hell for what im paying on this house in CA,,, i could be living in a house twice the size
with a couple luxury cars in the drive way in a different state....

if "legal weed" is the only incentive to move to CA, i would seriously reconsider....

Word, that really is a generall summary of how most of us round here feel.
To the craigslist comparison with a place in lets say Davis, San lousi obispo area, santa cruz, and diego outs kirts like escondedo, then take the avg rent w/ out utilities and look for a house in say oregon or as tree said montana....its disturbing.

i found a fully furnished 4 bedroom house built in 1993 on 40 acres in wyoming for $1800.
((try to see what you can find for $1800 in CA...hehhhe guranteed wont have 40acres, or a mule))

http://wyoming.craigslist.org/apa/1064342284.html

place is fucking beautiful....hell im thinking about packing the family
and heading east...

Shoot, he can move to California AND afford a ranch in Wyoming both. Maybe I'll get me one those too. How much do those rent out for? In this economy, rentals are some good steady income, I'm just sayin'.

I'm about to go to bed and really tired, I'll respond in kind to the AWESOME advice and words above later. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for throwing around ideas and thoughts. This has been a really, really great thread for me. Incredibly helpful.

real quick while I can still keep my eyes open: wtf is the catch? Wyoming maximum penalty for growing is 6 months according the norml?

EDIT: Nevermind. I now see that when one of those harvested plants that weighs over 3 oz is nabbed, you're facing 5 years.

lol. Great stuff.

Good call. Yeah, I saw that piece of shit show that used the guise of journalism. Pretty gross. San Fran is amazing; I wish I could afford it, heh.

The landlords are catching on in a big way; I can tell just from craigslist alone, particularly in norcal. they mention no grow clauses in the first fucking sentence of the ads! Can't say I blame them all things considered. Lots of douchebags out there.

Thanks for your post. I've considered broadening my horizons to states that are slightly less friendly than CA, but it's a tough happy medium to find. People say stuff about the cops, then norml says another, then you google sentencing and it says something different than both, etc.

Colorado is an example of this. You can grow six plants, but if you're caught with more than 2 oz of product you can go to jail. lol wtf is that? Somebody out there grow 2 gram plants? It's a joke; it's just begging cops to take advantage of a poorly written law.

I've done more than look at craigslist in Cal. to know landlords will NOT allow patients to grow. You pretty much have to buy or lie. Which is why, contrary to good sage advice from natagonnaworry....(notgonnalookitupsorrythenidid) I am buying a cheaper fixer. (But I'm unique in that I'll easily just turn it into a rental when I find a place I really want to live.) I might have a house you can rent in about a year and a half, movingtocally, lol.

Washington has a 15 plant limit now, and 24 ounces dry. But it is only legal to give it away. I think we might see things take off there, but you are right, nothing is as free as California right now.

i dont rec. cali, dont move to southern california at least. if you come out to cali you have to live in the NORTH, you can live in the bay area but with 12k you can only afford something cheap.

you can rent a room inside a 4-5 apt in San Francisco for around 600-1000, you live with strangers but you get your own room generally.

in order to live in the east bay or the suburbs, you gotta have a house and they rent for 2000+ easily.

if you are trying to grow in cali forget about it, you have to have alot of money to invest to grab a house, i am breaking the bank right now acheiving my dream. you can live out here no problem though, if you are really a savage you can rent a room in the Tenderloin for like 495 a month, if you dont mind living next to junkies whores and dboys.

I can't see why any one would want to live in California. Maybe if it was like 1930 or something but now its just a shit hole. I live in the west and it kicks ass, but if you live in the west you don't consider California to be in the west. It is just a misplaced eastern state. The grow card is a fun idea but all it is is a list of people they will kick the door in on one day. You want to grow. Then grow and do it in the real west.

Try Oregon or Washington or Montana or Idaho or Alaska.

Hey man. The school thing-I can actually finish up my remaining credits online, thus I can complete my degree living anywhere in the country, which is sweet.

And nah, I don't plan on commercial growing, ever. Not that I have a problem or moral issue with it, it's just not something I considered for me, for a bunch of reasons. I just want to grow my own. Not only is "decent" smoke hard to come by here, it's also ungodly expensive. The best weed around here is shit you would probably pass on, living in California. That's why I'm moving; to smoke a sativa when I feel like writing, and an indica when I have a headache.

check out denver. alot of really beautiful women and cool stoner cats out
there,,, ALOT of great weed. some of it is expensive because alot is
shipped in from both coasts>>>but that means they always have killer
weed and a great selection. laws in denver for cannabis are pretty relaxed.
you can find an apartment for about 500-800

>>or you can find some really
snazzy joints like this one for under $1500 a month

http://denver.craigslist.org/apa/1068786905.html

the university up there is a big party school which means there is plenty
of interaction and what not on the college level. you can even get involved
with SAFER >>>which is a recreational pro-mj group that is pretty well
respected in the community.

electricity is cheaper than CA. and the people are friendlier as well.

america is filled with gems, and alot of the time they are over looked.
california can be great,, but i think it is severly overrated unless you work
in the film/music/computer tech field,,, or you just REALLY love to surf in
cold water...

just remeber,, quality weed grows everywhere. i grow excellent herb
(or at least id like to believe so...) but it would taste just as good in CA
as it would in anyother state >>weeds not geographicaly racist,,,yeh feel?

anyway. im just another one of them cats that live by that creedo:::

everythings legal until you get caugh.. so im not always best to take
advice from,,,but usually my rantings are in the right place...

Great stuff in this thread from everyone, lots of good advice/perspective.I honestly had never thought about Cali as a residence (was there in my youth for 4 mos.) I have considered the midwest middle-of-nowhere idea though. That appeals to me greatly. As a father I have other concerns to think about though, schools, social services, doctors etc.

Maybe one day I'll leave this East Coast behind for the sunny skies and shaky ground of Cali again for another extended vaca.....scenery,women and weather was a killer combo.

Sorry nothing more to offer, I just took my medicine and I'm all good now.

Good luck OP,

I live in the bayarea, I basically live paycheck to paycheck and I make about $2,400 a month after taxes. So on 12k that would last you about 5 months.

The trick is to find a friend you can be a roomate with in California. If you come out here with 12k and no real backup plan and you are on your own then you WILL go bankrupt. You need a roomate or two roomates so rent stays low so worst case sceniro you can get some shitty job and still pay rent.

If you're going to move out here I would suggest convincing a friend to come with you so you have a roomate. Worse case sceniro you could live out here for a month or two and then find a roomate through craigslist or something.

^^ basically what he says, the only way i am able to rent a house and grow is through teaming up with a trusted friend and becomming roomates. I could not do this alone.

what is it about california? the way overpriced housing? the overcrowded... everything? the bleach blonds with tit jobs(that want nothing to do with a walmart cashier that grows weed in his closet)? the crime?

i guess there is the weather...

well i cant really say i have wanted to move to CA or have ever even really been there, except for an airport. this is just my view. dont hate me if you live there and love it.

i believe there are 13 mmj states now. surely one of those has what you are looking for. i mean, where i am i have the opposite of everything in the first paragraph. i do have a winter though... but i like to actually have 4 seasons.

and hell, if you gotta have your starbucks, we have those too :joint:

Personally I love Cali but I gotta agree with other people. It is way overpriced, the cost of living is insane compared to other states.

But if you really are serious bout the weed life than Cali is the safest place to go. True there are other medical weed states but none are as relaxed as California.

If you want a good idea of how relaxed certain parts of California are just check out the show on msnbc called "Marijuana Inc." A lot of people in Cali actually make a career out of Marijuana without much fear of going to prison, that's not something other states can really offer.

Hell, you said you're a college student right? They even got a weed college in Oakland. Maybe go there check it out and who knows maybe you'll switch careers and end up working in the marijuana industry for a living. We all have dreams right? :)

However if you just want to grow a few plants here and there and smoke weed and chill. I have to agree, you can easily do that in other states for less than half the cost of living. I mean in cali you might be forced to do a small grow in a closet of your one bedroom apartment where you could have 5 garages in other state for the same price like someone else mentioned :)

Here's the thing that sucks about Cali (for me at least) I've always dreamed of growing a lot or getting a job in the marijuana industry but guess what. With all the money im spending on rent and other bills, I've never been able to. I don't have the money to get a place that's even big enough to grow. I could always get some roomates but I dunno that can turn ugly real quick if you're growing weed. So here I am in the middle of the most weed friendly state in America and I can't even take advantage of it cause I'm just too broke.
