Boiling your jars...

Hi guys. I am using ball mason jars for my cure. Wanted to know if there would be any adverse effects to pulling a vac. using the old boiling/canning method on the stove top. Will this indeed preserve (at the right RH inside) the buds or will this screw something up? Thanks for your answers everybody. :thank you:

I'm definitely no expert, and I am frequently wrong; but I'll share my thoughts, given that serious caveat...
And if nothing else, just give you a couple of things to consider, while we wait for someone with more experience and confidence!:

My initial concern is that the heat required to sterilize the jars, could possibly cause degradation...
Secondly, since you'll be 'burping' the jars frequently, as they cure, it would seem to me, to be unnecessary, wouldn't it? :chin:
Each time they were opened, the sterility would be compromised; no? :dunno:

Again, be sure to take this with the appropriately small 'grain of salt'...
I'm sure that someone with real expertise will chime in soon, now that this has received a fresh :bump:

Wishing you well, DownToEarth!!

Just buy or scrounge some of those oxygen eater packs and place them inside the sealed jar.

google search pump-n-seal, it is a handhelp pump that goes on top of a tape valve you stick on a jar lid after poking a hole in it with a tack, fairly inexpensive.

Alot of the vac n seal for plastic bags also come with an attachment for jars. Better be damn sure its cured tho.

I figured it wouldn't be long before the educated mob showed! :)

I overlooked the mention of RH in DownToEarth's first post at first, but that could definitely be another area of concern, as Zep kindly mentioned.:

Those 'vac-seal, pump jars', you all mentioned, sound like a great idea with cured buds; especially for long term storage.
...Do they make glass jars like that? (I think I've only seen plastic vac-seal pump jars?)

Thank you gentlemen. I made a boo boo with my wording. I was wanting to store the cure for an unknown length of time. Had a lot on my mind today. However you all did get me to put my mind back on track here. My thought was "if it's cured and sitting at the right humidity and it don't sell, it will dry out in the jar cause it's not air tight". Just didn't want to open the jar months later and have it do the vampire in the sun thing right inside the jar. You guys are the best, I think I'll forsake the boiling water treatment and opt for the canning lid attachment on my food sealer. :thank you: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...03-0006-01+Regular-Mouth+Jar+Sealer&x=18&y=20

If I am going to store long term, it gets dried really well - not so much cured. My main method of ingestion is eating so it works well for me.

i jar my weed and then stick it in the fridge, stole the idea from SOTF420, whom i think keeps his in a locked mini fridge, but the difference from 75 degrees down to a 33 degree fridge or whatever is enough to pop the tops ...though if that is the case does that not mean that even if you do store your weed at room temp and there is no vacuum, isn't the seal just as good? i mean if all you have to do is lower the temp to build a vacuum inside the jar then doesn't that mean that the lid isn't letting anything in or out, regardless to the temperature and lack of vacuum or presence of one?

i thought plants start vaping at like 190 degrees, i would think boiling your weed in jars would effect the flavor at least somewhat in the same way a vaporizer does...not to mention lower potency...im sure if it was a good idea somebody would have thought of it before but ive never heard of people doing it...

Why is your jars not air tight?? If the lids are good you should get a air tight seal.
